All things considered, do you think the 1960s were positive for society?

quote:

The Sixties", as they are known in both scholarship and popular culture, is a term used by historians, journalists, and other objective academics; in some cases nostalgically to describe the counterculture and revolution in social norms about clothing, music, drugs, dress, sexuality, formalities, and schooling. Conservatives denounce the decade as one of irresponsible excess, flamboyance, and decay of social order. The decade was also labeled the Swinging Sixtiesbecause of the fall or relaxation of social taboos especially relating to racism and sexism that occurred during this time.

The 1960s became synonymous with the new, radical, and subversive events and trends of the period. In Africa the 1960s was a period of radical political change as 32 countries gained independence from their European colonial rulers.

Obviously there was the counterculture and a lot of challenging conservative social norms. There was the flower power movemet, anti-war protest, civil rights for blacks, more feminism, the “ new left," and a large increase in crime. The increase in the divorce rate is also worth discussing. In popular culture, you had the British Invasion and rise of psychedelic drugs.

Y'all know all of this and you have your thoughts on its cultural impact.

Do you think of the 60s as a positive social revolution, or when morality (or God) left America?

Anytime people question authority, it is a good thing.

I've always thought the 60's stood out more due in large part to the advances in mass communication. The emergence of television as the primary source of news and entertainment contributed greatly to the magnitude of social change that was achieved. I don't know that there was any more sense of rebellion among the youth than in previous generations. It was just more publicized.

Disclaimer: I grew up in the 60's so my view may differ from someone who has only read about them.

Being in HS from '65-'69 was fun and scary. As a 17 year old kid I had lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis; the assassinations of JFK, RFK, MLK; the Berlin Wall being built; Nikita Khrushchev telling us "We Will Bury You"; the escalation of the Viet Nam War; great racial unrest; A-Bomb "duck and cover" drills; etc. But the music was tremendous. I still listen to the music of those days. I didn't do drugs, but I did experiment with scotch.

You are older than I am, but I will say it was the most creative time in terms of art and music that we have seen. I will say yes to the OP. A war that we won, yet lost. But, the Civil War was what will always define us.

No music or art from the 60s will be valued in 100 years

The decade was a cultural vaccuum

Pop Art? Lichtenstein and Warhol? Yeah, no. Trash, utterly forgettable trash.

Explain.

Which decades have better music and art?
