And I don't think a reasonable argument can be made for any of the rest of them

It's disqualified because 75% of the movie is montages.

I prefer 2. It's the least appreciated of the series.

Is anyone actually debating this?

It won Best Picture, Best Director, was nominated for Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Screenplay.

The rest of the movies, while fun, had essentially nothing to do with the original movie other than character names.

You serious Clark?

I don't make out the Oscars to be the "be all, end all" of what makes a movie great (after all a turd like Titanic can win multiple awards and make $1 billion).

Having said that, a sports film with a lead actor of "limited" gravitas (at least at the time) and perhaps even less true acting ability, who also writes the script, producing what was, for its day, just a notch above an independent film, and scores wins for:

Best Picture

Irwin Winkler
Robert Chartoff

Best Director

John G. Avildsen

Best Film Editing

Richard Halsey
Scott Conrad

and nominations for:

Best Actor in a Leading Role

Sylvester Stallone

*Sylvester Stallone becomes the third person to be nominated for both acting and writing in the same film

Best Actress in a Leading Role

Talia Shire

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Burgess Meredith

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Burt Young

Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen

Sylvester Stallone

Best Sound

Harry W. Tetrick
William L. McCaughey
Lyle J. Burbridge
Bud Alper

Best Music, Original Song

Bill Conti(music)
Carol Connors(lyrics)
Ayn Robbins(lyrics)

For the song "Gonna Fly Now"

And becomes, arguably the most influential sports film of all time?

I like Rocky I-IV and Rocky Balboa. There are those who argue that Rocky III is second worst (mainly because of the story and the acting).

I enjoy the film, but it is barely a shadow of the original. Even IV did many of the things that III tried to do, and did them better, although the acting wasn't much of an improvement.

That's laughable. It's second-to-worst IMO (and I'm including Rocky Balboa in that statement).

My favorite by far is 4, but it's not as "good" as 1 and 2 I don't think.

Nice troll job though, supes.

What he said all day.

One was masterpiece. Anyone who honestly thinks 3 is the best likely had a closet full of tap out shirts. They aren't even comparable.

IV is the most re-watchable

I is the best movie

I watched Rocky IV so many times as a kid, I could sing the Russian national anthem.

Dunno about "best", but III is my favorite.

The opening montage of Rocky's title defenses over " Eye of the Tiger"".

Rocky's struggles with the good life and getting too comfortable.

Clubber Lang is a badass.

Mickey's death

Apollo coming back to train Rocky and get him hungry again.

A great ending in the gym.

Lots of great things in the movie.

Hard to argue against the evidence for Rocky I but I still like III the best.

Preferences may have something to do with the era you grew up in. If your a late 70's, early 80's "coming of ager" I or II may be your favorite. I came of age in the mid to late 80's, so III was right in there. IV and beyond were past my time.

I, II, and IV are better than III
