Petroleum Engineering Career Question

Currently in the program. Have about a 3.3 GPA. This seems to be too low for a solid internship (without connections)...
Question:
If you need the internship to get the full time position at a company like Shell...then where the heck do the others get a job? I hear that all of the petroleum engineering majors get hired for the most part....but there seem to be FAR less internship spots.
What's the scoop on this?

Wildly cyclical. Some years there aren't enough students to fill jobs. When I was a freshman juniors were getting offers. When I was a senior (out of the program) nobody got jobs.

Work as a roughneck somewhere. Get some experience, try to get your grades up, and get a better internship the next summer.

Working for an oil and gas company now. Problem (maybe) is that I'm not doing petroleum engineering at this company. Getting tons of exposure to the industry as virtually all of the major operators are our customers.
I had hoped this would land me something a little better this summer but I'm thinking my gpa is landing me in the discard pile up front.

Thats not high enough for Shell or XOM but I think you would be okay with Chev and some of the mid majors. Advice to you is get experience, it is worth its wait in gold. My gpa is horrible and never makes the cut but I still get looked at a lot and get a good bit of interviews bc of the experience I have.

Any oilfield experience is better than none. Put in applications everywhere and call them until they tell you to stop. Oilfield is dog eat dog and spots will come open when somebody messes up.

If you are okay with starting with a service company then you are golden, 3.3 is plenty. Work on experience and getting internships with them.

3.3 should be plenty good enough for mid-majors or independents. At least it was when I was in the program several years ago.
But the people who benefitted most were the people who got internships freshman year. Once you get the first one, people start knocking down your door.

You don't need any "engineering" work. Field work is way more important.
