Because Sumlin wasn't a Michigan Man. Interesting tidbit that I hadn't heard before.

quote:

"I don't know how many people know this, but when Dave Brandon was interviewing to replace Rich Rod, one of the guys he actually interviewed was Kevin Sumlin. And he turned down Kevin Sumlin and ended up taking Brady Hoke, the Michigan guy. And I can't imagine too many Michigan fans are thrilled now that they know that that was the decision that was made ... [Sumlin] was one of the guys they considered, and they didn't want ... Not a Michigan guy, though, and they wanted the Michigan man."

Radio interview.

So sick of hearing this phrase. But they deserve all that comes from constantly repeating it.

I wonder if they also feared that Sumlin wouldn't recruit any good defensive players. That tends to be a knock on offensive coaches. And there were very few good defensive players of note under Rich Rod. Regardless, they still goofed.

The media is blowing this "coaching search" way outta proportion.

Michigan is a mediocre program who will probably end up hiring some MAC coach.

yeah they had just hired a spread option guru who was a failure of sorts. they weren't going to go hire a spread guy right after

and if sumlin went to UM, we'd be talking about how UM didn't give a black coach a chance as they were in discussions to fire him

UM is the problem, not the coaches

I wonder how their recruiting has changed since the SEC/south started its run in the last 16 years (all but one BCS title was won by a southern team). The south in general has dominated football in the BCS era (SEC, Big 12 and ACC leading the way). If Michigan relied on the south for feeding it many players, I am sure that pipeline has dried up somewhat.

Michigan is pretty overrated though. One shared title in the last 66 years (1997). No BCS title game appearances. And now stuck in a conference that in arguably only the 5th best conference of the Power 5.

100% agree

RichRod didn't fail at Michigan. He was sabotaged from the start by a bunch of sanctimonious, arrogant Michigan insiders who still worship at the altar of the most overrated coach in college football history - Bo Schembechler.

So if I didn't need any other reasons to dislike Michigan...they possibly created the chain reaction of Louisiana recruits going to A&M.

It does get old, but I wouldn't mind being a Michigan man myself.

They need to hire a young, offensive coach that wears a visor...

It's been a development problem more than a recruiting problem. They honestly should have one of the best OLs in college football. They have recruited absolute studs along the line and have nothing to show for it through complete lack of development.

Between just the 2012 and 2013 classes they signed at least 7 guys who are 4* along the OL, with almost all being top 100 guys nationally.

How many schools have averaged 3 top 100 guys on the OL in the past few years? Not many

They have been overall top 10 in recruiting in 2012/2013 and were 20th last year with only 16 guys. Recruiting isn't the issue at this point

this type of info needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
