I will be living the 2 happiest days in a boat owners life. I am selling my old fish/ski (think bass boat) and wanting to buy a pontoon boat for cruising with the family.

1) What are things I should put in the listing of the boat I am selling?

2) What are questions I should be asking when looking at buying a used boat?

(I do not want opinions on my decision to sell and purchase or about pontoons, please. Also, I am not trying to sell the boat in this tread or on this site.) Thanks in advance.

we need to add this to the OB FAQ thread if successful.

Look at the better ads on La. Sportsman and copy.

When you do check out your new boat, don't overlook the trailer. That has cost me in the past.

Pro-Tip for buying and selling anything online:

When buying, search for positive reviews of whatever product you are selling and use them as a base to describe the product you are selling.

When selling, search for negative reviews of whatever product you are buying and make sure you ask the buyer about those issues directly. This also gives you things to look at when inspecting the product in person.

Always works like a charm for me.

Just like selling anything else, point out the things that make the boat desirable. Ride characteristic, motor size, age, hours, when maintenance was completed, trolling motor details, seating capacity, battery age, Beam and length, any electronics.

Pontoon - Motor condition is #1 priority. #2 is trailer #3 is the pontoons themselves. Then comes everything else, Wiring Rats nest of splices and patches? lights (do they work), flooring (no soft spots) and interior

Oh, and disclose everything that doesn't work or is a problem. The last thing you want is to buy the new one, then have to deal with the buyer on complaints about defects.

Geauxs idea is good. If you have a specific model in mind, research known issues and you will know what to look for specific to that boat. Find a good owners forum and you will leanr alot of the pros and cons of any model.

What should I be looking for in the motor and trailer as far as issues?

trailer
Rotten bunks, poorly maintained hubs, wiring, lights, coupler damage, rusted leafs. I doubt it will have trailer brakes, but if so, check those.

While I agree that its best to be up front about issues your boat may have, all sales are final and AS IS. Buyer can go jump in a lake after I have money in hand.

I see you've never dealt with this.

I wish you the best in city court with your non-free lawyer.

Good point. Luckily, the boat I am selling is in great shape. I believe the phrase is "to my knowledge"

Must be different laws in LA then. Alabama laws specifies all private sales are As Is. I thought it was always buyer beware with private sales.

And yes, I've sold several.

2) What are questions I should be asking when looking at buying a used boat?

start with motor:
1. prop,SS better, good shape? spin it and look at center of prop shaft. does it look like a dot or a circle. if a circle the shaft is not strait.
2. take off cowling and look at head. is there corrosion? Is there discolored paint(overheated)
3. check compression of each cylinder. shouldn't be much variance between them. 5% acceptable
4. if carbed , take off air box. Run engine on muffs or in water. Rev to 2000-2500 rpm and place your hand over each carb. you should feel suction. if not, wrist pin has worn and allowed piston to wobble.

#4 baffled a bunch of people om my 200 Yamaha before a master figured it out.

Trailer
1. the more you will be towing it the better the trailer should be. if your just going to tow it to a camp and the trailer is going to sit all the time, the trailer is not much of an issue if the hubs and tires are ok. If you are going to be towing it every time you use it then it needs to be copacetic. most trailer issues are self evident. springs, axles and tires are expensive, everything else not so much.

good luck on both Chappy!

I don't doubt it. I mean you have not dealt with an unreasonable buyer. That can make your life miserable.

thanks. I just do not know much about boats except how to run m current one. I just do not want to be taken to the cleaners when buying. I just got a text from my wife. She has a cousin who is certified in most boat engines as a mechanic. i will be taking him with me to inspect before I purchase.

I help friends buy used boats and the advise I give them is to factor in replacing the engine within 2 years.

If it is still a good deal to you go for it.
