I didn't feel like cooking last night. I was in the Jesuit neighborhood and decided to give 12 Mile a try. I love BBQ. I ordered the brisket with a side of slaw and macaroni.

I wasn't a fan of the brisket. I think it was cooked in the oven as opposed to a smoker/grill. The macaroni was not spectacular. It reminded me of Stouffer's in appearance and taste. The slaw was interesting. It seemed to taste like a hybrid between slaw and kim chi.

The cocktails were good. The BBQ sauce was undesirable.

For bar food, I'd say it was above average.

How is this a fair comparison?

I'll never understand why everything needs to be topped with green onion.

I've heard some say that 12 Mile is the best in the city.

Really? Who? The Joint is consistently named #1 bbq in Nola.

May be an attempt to do something to jazz up that plate. It's an ugly fricking plate of food that's for sure.

Why would I make that up? Some people just don't know good food.

I think the Joint is terrible, but so is most BBQ in New Orleans. Nola Smokehouse is probably the best BBQ I have had here. Though usually if I'm eating BBQ it's from the egg. The Joint is always dry to me.

Still trying to get here. It's very close to me.

The rhetoric is strong this morning.

Their undercooked brisket w/ un-rendered fat is to die for.

Perhaps we should all just admit that bbq just isn't that interesting of a cuisine to begin with and stop looking for something exceptional, especially in a city not even known for it.

Yea, have seen nothing in NOLA that trumps what comes off my smoker. Not sure why we don't have a good bbq scene, but we just don't.

Was the guy with the beard doing the BBQ? Keep in mind this is more of a pop up type deal than a traditionally run kitchen.

The side are just some BS out of a box but he does do tater tots and who doesn't like tots.

His set up out back looks like something out of a back yard in a trailer park, however I have always enjoyed his meats at 12 mile.

And don't listen to R2R on BBQ. He has said in his own way of putting things that he is above BBQ. He has been complaining about NOLA smokehouse's fatty brisket out of a pop up he had once years ago. Never even set foot in this guys restaurant yet he wants to bash this guys craft that supports his family's livelihood.

R2R is also the same character I've seen in the back of Squeal BBQ going all Guy Fieri to a pork sandwhich.

I didn't see anyone but the bartender.

I did finish the meal with on a high note. I got a couple Dobites from Debbie does Doberge.

Not really. Commercial BBQ in New Orleans is not good. That is pretty universally acknowledged. Put the Joint up against even an average place in GA, TX or even AL and it comes out on bottom. They get crushed in all the comps in the area. They opened up a BBQ place in the marigny before the marigny and BBQ were super hip and trendy. They made a name for themselves and live off of that.

I don't typically order brisket here but pork at Nola smokehouse was better when I went than other places here. BBQ can be out of this world, but I agree not in this city. That's why I prefer to do my own BBQ especially if I have a craving for brisket.

Another reason a comparison to The Joint is unfair.

Huge surprise. It seems most bbq joints take this short cut. The ones that do don't get my return business.

Nice argument e silentio.

That should be indicative of just how fricking disgusting it was.

so now by not liking somebody's cooking I want to put a guy and his family out on the street?

Yep. I've also eaten shitty pizza from Magazine Pizza and been swung through a Jack in the Box drive thru, and stopped into Cane's in the past year in the name of not waking up hungover as dog shite.
