The family has been bugging me for a dog and we've been looking at beagle and english bull dogs. Clearly both very different dogs.

I'm leaning toward the bull dog as I like the sound of the personality and would prefer a laid back inside dog. Besides being really expensive, I understand they can have some health issues with their wrinkles and short snout.

Anyone have one and would recommend it as a family dog (I've got young kids)? Pros? Cons?

Wonderful dogs, good with family (kids) but they have skin maladies and can't take the heat. Need to make them inside dogs for sure. Probably looking at bone/joint problems in later life. Snore, fart, snorkel and make all sorts of pig noises. But they make good companions for the family.

Good with kids. A fun loving dog. They get very hot easily, slobber, and often have an odor.

If your only other option is a fricking beagle? Sure. They snore, breathe loud, drool bad, have skin problems, and overheat pretty easily. But they are pretty cool. If you go that route get a rescue. Don't feed money into puppy mills when there are already too many bulldogs.

ETA: They stink. But 98% of dogs stink. You people live in stinky houses. Fact.

They're awesome dogs. Really kind and gentle. Mine has never been aggressive.

They are high maintenance dogs though. The wrinkles are easy to deal with, just keep em clean. Wet wash cloth every few days. They are absolutely inside dogs. Don't handle heat well at all. Have respitory issues as well. Just know what you're getting into before you get one.

I'd recommend one for the family dog, but be aware they aren't just expensive in initial cost but will likely rack up some vet bills along the way too.

ETA: the farts are ridiculous

Had one for 8 years. They are expensive to own, but you will love it. Very loyal to their owners and very expressive with their emotions. Do not need much exercise bc they don't want to move around much, they are lazy. Need to be inside most of the time with the LA climate. The sad part is that they have shortened lifespans due to their medical issues.

I recommend really doing you research on the English Bulldog. I wanted one for the longest time and here are a few things that I have found.

1. They are expensive. They are often delivered via c-section and puppy care is very time consuming, thus inflating the price. They normally run $2000-4000.

2. They have a lot of health issues, especially in the cold, due to the folds of their skin. Respiratory problems are common.

3. They average about 8 years.

Yes, my brother has one. They are work. I have a Boston. She does very well with kids and, so far, doesn't have the problems of the EB. Would recommend. She is not hyper either, just goes nuts when someone is at the door.
