I would not mind if they blew their load on Hanley on a 3 year contract.
We are underestimating how important this offseason SHOULD be to the FO. Surely they understand the need to make some sort of splash.

I just hope that the front office doesn't just stay with what we have now just because we showed improvement in the second half of the season.

stay calm. now is not the time to panic. we'll spend money in 2018 when our core prospects are ready

Interesting article on House of Houston...
According to some folks in Oakland they may be looking to trade Josh Donaldson.
The article is all about how the Astros need to make a move for him.
In he article, they propose this trade...
Josh Donaldson
For
Folty, Domingo, Rio Ruiz, Nitro and JD Davis
What say the DAT?

I fully expect Ruiz or Moran to be traded at some point (maybe not this offseason, but eventually). Maybe at the trade deadline next year after you see both of them up close in the spring and after another half a year of AA/AAA ball. They might both be MLB ready around the same time, so might as well use one as a major trade piece if you don't plan on using both in the MLB lineup together. With Carter possibly making a claim at fulltime DH for the foreseeable future with his great second half, it doesn't look like there would be room for both Rio and Moran at the same time. With that said, I actually think I would do that trade for Donaldson. Josh is a really good defender and may add 10 HRs to his totals each year coming to MMP from Oakland. Possible .265 Avg & 30 HR with a solid 3B glove in Houston for the next 4 years (with that stat line maybe being on the low end)? Sign me up. The biggest issue is that he Ks a lot and the Astros don't need that, obviously. But he also walks a lot and keeps an OBP around .340ish. And if it turns out Moran can really hit, maybe a switch to 1st base is possible if Singleton doesn't improve as much as we hope. Who knows?
Winter meetings aren't too far away, so hopefully Houston is active.
Same article also mentions the Stros should make a play for JJ Hardy in free agency. A former gold glove SS with 15-20 HR pop (maybe 10-15 HR pop now) to hold over SS for a couple of years... Im ok with that if you can sign him on the cheaper end since he is coming off a down year. And he finished with 9 HRs despite not hitting his first until the last week of June, so he still has some pop left if he doesn't go though a ridiculously long homerless streak like that again.

Astros trim their 40 man rosters and get ready for Decembers Rule 5 draft. First baseman Jesus Guzman and left-handed pitcher Rudy Owens were outrighted off the 40-man roster. Also Fat Albers did not have his option picked up for 2015. Pitched only 8 games this past season. Nothing major happened by figured I update the offseason DAT.

Minor note
Hitting coach John Mallee has accepted the same position with the Cubs. Hate to see that after the success of Carter and Altuve.
Pitching coach Brent Strom will return.

Giving up one of our best and most promising arms for a third baseman that hits .265 and maybe 30 homeruns.
frick that.

There were like nine players who hit .265 with 30+ HRs in all of MLB this year. Donaldson led all 3B in HR RBI WAR and was 4th in OPS

If you take Folty out of that deal and add in another pitcher...maybe Wojo or an Alex White type, I'd do that trade

We've given up at least 4 years of winning to get these prospects I would hate to see them traded before they even play a full year in the mlb. The astros would be crazy to make any moves for a 3rd baseman after getting moran and already having ruiz. Not to mention the possible of correa moving later in his career, although I would hate for that to happen you never know.

Astros decline $3M option on Matt Albers
Jesus Guzman and Rudy Owens removed from the 40 man roster. Both clear waivers and outrighted to Minors
Astros now have 36 men on the 40 man, and with the Rule V coming up, we have to protect DDS, Velasquez, Feliz
Jorge DeLeon waived & claimed by the A's

Decent article about which infield free agents are a good fit for the Astros this offseason.
Infield Targets For Astros
Summary of article: Outside of breaking the bank for Panda or Hanley, there isn't much out there.
I also read another article a few days ago that I cant find right now about JL saying he expects to increase payroll by about $20 million this offseason. At it's peak last season, the payroll was around $50M, so we should be looking at a $70M payroll this upcoming season.
