Question for lifters on shoes/wraps

My squat is getting close to the 5 plate mark and Im thinking about switching to get a pair of dedicated lifting shoes and potentially some knee wraps. Currently I only use a belt, but with the weights at this point Im beginning to notice limitations, perhaps just psychological, on fear of injury.
I figure I'd start with the shoes first and then potentially add wraps if the weight gets high enough. Dan or Mikelbr or others, do you have any suggestions?

I've known guys who lifted in wrestling shoes. I've also known guys who wear Doc Martens to lift. And a few who go barefoot (not recommended)

Shoes help you stay on heels more rather than pitching forward and dive bombing into a face plant. With knee wraps, yes it helps with stopping at the bottom and giving a spring effect. You need somebody else to wrap and who knows how to do it correctly. I bought a pair of Adidas Powerlift 2.0 and the do the trick. Shoes can get expensive. Both are a good buy if serious about squatting.

Yeah you can go to most real athletic shoe stores and ask them about it. You're looking for a zero drop or as near to zero drop shoe as possible. I have new balance minimus. They were $100. I like them a lot. Not sure on wraps, but sleeves are pretty easy to work with.

Chuck Taylors are all you need

I used to just wear new balance running shoes and never had an issue. As long as you're in a good rack with a good spotter and have good form, you shouldn't get hurt no matter how much weight you put on there.

Adidas Adipower or Nike Romaleos are the two shoes of choice if you're doing any Olympic lifts. Adipowers are on sale now for $139. I prefer them, but if you have a really broad foot you may want Romaleos.
Adidas Adipower
Edit: for just power lifting, chucks or wrestling shoes work well. Some I know like Vibram five fingers for squats and deadlifts.

5 plates? Wouldn't the bar be unbalanced?
I'd hate to spot you.

Pretty sure he means 5 plates/side

5 on each side is probably enough

I hope you are using spotters if your squatting nearly 500 pounds.

For squatting I find that a shoe with a hard sole is important. This can be Oly shoes, or something similar to Combat Boots or chucks. The important part is the shoe's sole can't have too much "give" to it. The cushion in the sole is comfortable, but makes for an unstable lifting platform. The more stable you feel the more confidence you have really putting out at max effort.
