Just stop by Dillard's on the way home.
Lenox is the old standard.
Wedgewood, Noritake, and Mikasa are other well known brands.

Unless you plan on having many formal parties or displaying them, most women just pack them up to be passed on to children.
My wife currently owns four sets - hers, her mom's, my mom's, and her grandmother's.

Lenox. We have Moonspun, but they have probably 50-60 different patterns.

I have an entire China cabinet full of Lenox. We use it once a year for Christmas dinner. Save your money.

Also, stay away from trendy patterns that will look outdated in a decade.

Lenox Solitaire is what we use for parties.

We hosted an engagement party for my nephew about 8 years ago and some kid knocked a freaking $220 gravy boat off the table and broke it. I hate to even take it out anymore. Most of it was wedding gifts and then my wife's grandmother handed down some pieces to us. It's something quite silly to display when you really think about it.

ETA: Mrs Cove has a couple three sets though. I'm not sure what kind. You know, because I have testicles and stuff.

I used to sell this stuff.

Wedgwood is nice and readily available, and most of their fine china patterns are bone china which I prefer. Royal Doulton is similar. There are many nicer brands but they're often harder to find stores which carry them, which means they're often much more expensive and harder to come by replacement pieces. I fell in love with a Royal Worcester pattern and it has to be special-ordered.

Lenox, Mikasa, and Noritake have some nice patterns and are very popular. Most major department stores (like Macy's, Bloomingdales, or Dillard's) carry them.

I'd recommend going with a simpler pattern (plain with a gold or silver band), and add patterned salad plates or dinner plates which coordinate with them. Lenox Solitaire (plain w/silver band) and Eternal (plain w/gold band) are EXTREMELY popular and both have holiday patterned pieces to accent them. I'm just not a big fan of ivory porcelain china.
