They just went into Beta and is invite only for now. Pretty intriguing, here is their manifesto:
quote:
Your social network is owned by advertisers.
Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold.
We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.
We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce and manipulate — but a place to connect, create and celebrate life.
You are not a product.

I don't think you know what Geocities is.

I think he just means the design looks crappy and amateurish right now. Facebook looked pretty terrible in its infancy too.
What is their business model?

Selling out our privacy reminds me of the debate in the PTA Disbands episode of The Simpsons. LINK Most people are going to be all for privacy, until you ask them to pay money to keep it.
Regarding ello specifically, the primary "product" of a Social Network isn't the software, it's the audience that software lets you communicate with. Any social network that isn't free is doomed to failure, or at least will never become dominant. There are just too many people unwilling to pay for privacy.

It seems to be getting pretty good traction right out the gate. We'll see if it continues. It's already doing better than app.net (paid twitter competitor)

I'm about to request so many invitations.

I don't see any ads on my facebook page. How's Google Plus doing? No one ever talks about that.

Apparently it is very popular with the LGBT community, even though it isn't specific to them.
I probably won't be an early adopter, but the gay community is great at taming wild country and turning it into Starbucks and Whole Foods paradise, so I'll keep my eye on it.
