Does putting in a young quarterback ruin them?
Posted by FourthQuarter on 9/29/14 at 1:51 pm05
Many people have said that if Brandon Harris plays poorly, it will hurt his confidence and he'll be damaged goods like Jarret Lee was after his freshman season. However is this true at all?
Here are Peyton Manning's NFL rookie stats:
Completion Pct% 56.7%, which is 9% lower than his career average
TD-Int: 26-28
Quarterback rating: 71.2, compared to his career average rating of 97.4
The Colts also finished the season 3-13.
So does putting in a freshman quarterback and having him lose a lot of games actually hurt his confidence or does it just give him more experience to grow from? If Harris is willing to work hard, then even if this season is a bust, it can be a great benefit to him.

Every QB is different, especially at the college level.

if they are good they will be good. Troy Aikman got his brains beaten in as a rookie in Dallas. Manning got destroyed in Indy. They turned out ok. on the other hand, David Carr always sucked, they played him early, and he still sucked.

A rookie QB starting in the NFL was a very rare thing, and even now people question whether or not it's a good decision.

The right answer is that it CAN but might not. Stupid questions get stupid answers.

Dude, your thread is about ruining a QB yet you use the best QB ever as an example of that because he had a bad rookie year?

You knew it was coming. After the Harris surprise wears off, we will have 20 Welter threads.

I'm trying to show that it was a good decision, for the people worried about a true freshman starting on the road vs an SEC team. If harris is good, he'll play well.

Agreed. But don't you think Peyton Manning is a little extraordinary. Can we find someone that doesn't have such a greatest of all time aura.

Well I was trying to prove that starting a freshman quarterback is a good decision because it lets them get lots of experience, so yes that was my example.

Dont be daft, he's trying to make a point and he's using a question format to do so.

Depends on the player. If he doesn't have the Chest to come back from a tough game, then yes it ruins them. But I don't want that player as my QB anyway, I'd rather have a guy who can shake off a bad pass or bad game and improve from it. If BH turns out to be the type who can't do that like Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson couldn't, fine, recruit new guys who can. But I believe this kid has the maturity and confidence to come back from a bad turn of events. He is the answer at QB that we've been waiting for. He has the mental framework of Flynn with the talent of much more

And yet, the last two Heisman winners have been underclassmen QBs.
