Swiss voters on Sunday rejected a plan for a seismic shift from the country's all-private health insurance system to a state-run scheme.

Referendum results showed that almost 62 percent of voters had shot down a reform pushed by left-leaning parties which say the current private system is busting the budgets of ordinary residents.

If Switzerland got rid of the mandate, I would admire the nation even more. But for now, Switzerland remains one of the more sane countries in Europe.

If you think American leftists are moonbats, then you've never met Eurotrahs moonbats. THIS was a talking point of theirs:

quote:

Critics say the current system is unfair because basic coverage costs a millionaire no more than it does a low-paid worker.

The pinkos of Switzerland truly believe that the price of a commodity should be determined by income level. The continent that gave us free enterprise is now populated largely by economic illiterates.

Before StrawmanTUba, doghead, or Vegas Bengal responds that Swisscare is Obamacare, let me just say that it is still a very positive thing that they rejected government control of the care. THAT is the subject of this thread. If you want to hijack it and use it to glorify messiahcare, then start your own thread.

62% of people rejected your favorite idea, rob. Deal with it.

Wait. I thought the mandate WAS government controlled health care. Is that no longer the case?

Dude, do you even read?

they rejected government control of the care

The proposal was direct government control of the CARE itself.

This is impossible because everyone knows forcing people to buy health insurance makes it affordable.

Yeah. Just like ObamaCare. You need to read more right wing blogs. Because doctors only work at the behest of King Obama, he can control the care itself by simply refusing to pay doctors who get out of line. Before long, for instance, all OBGYN's who refuse to do abortions will not be allowed to take payments from Medicare, Medicaid, ObamaCare, or any government paid for health care.

You need to educate yourself on these issues unless you want full blown Communism.

So they rejected socialized medicine for their version of Obamacare. That is smart, but I hope for their sake they don't stop there.

that's still coercion and not control over the care itself

Most of our healthcare is defacto govt controlled anyway. I don't like it but it's reality.

MediCare is where money is spent in truckloads.

Ayn Rand would approve, however most Republicans wouldn't.

If health care was a commodity, it would be bought and sold as such, and there would be little discussion about it around the world.

But it is NOT a commodity, and it will never be a commodity, so stop using derogatory terms to describe people who understand that.

That is the most intelligent thing you've ever said on this board.

so then doctors and nurses should all work for free? or they should all work for the same set fee? because if they have a right to bargain for more pay because their labor belongs to them, then it is a commodity.

Key words ... "Swiss Voters". ObamaCare would have died a quick death if put to a national referendum like the Swiss.

Nope.

Nope.

A commodity market cannot be healthy if a participant's life is a bargaining chip. It's not just a doctor's labor that we're buying... it's our own health. How do you put a value on your own health? The supply is one. The demand is one.

An individual's health care requirements are random and unpredictable. What if our food requirements fluctuated so wildly? We would have to buy food insurance. At this point, is food still the commodity, or is it the insurance? Both? How can a free market function as intended if the price paid is rarely consistent with the goods received?

Once services are rendered, this "commodity" dissipates. It's not an item that can be resold, nor is value added to anything that can be resold. It's not like repairing a house or a car.

Surely you can agree that health care is not simply a commodity, right? If it were, as I said, it would not be a global discussion.
