Not a blind tasting....but I have the distinct ability to separate preconceived notions and emotions from facts......I am Spock.stache.....my wife did a blind tasting and those results in a moment.

Appearance...DJ has a much better head. Interestingly, after 5 minutes or so, DJ had no remaining head but Ghost has a very slight bubbly line where the liquid met the glass. (No pic of that).

DJ is much more clear while Ghost is rather cloudy.

Lacing....I will give this to ghost.

Ghost

DJ

Aroma

I thought DJ would at least match ghost but Ghost aroma is great....is that Citra? Ghost wins.

Mouthfeel: Dj is much cleaner and effervescent. Ghost is somewhat flat. DJ wins.

Taste:

Ghost has a hop punch on the front end and then dies off quickly. DJ is more subtle.....The front end is not as strong but the back end dances on your tongue and does not dissipate nearly as fast as Ghost...DJ really lets you sit back and enjoy each sip.

Ghost has a citrus and apricot taste. DJ is pine and mango with a bit of maltiness coming through and has a nice clean, dry finish.

Overall: I am surprised how well Ghost stands up to DJ. I think its too close to call which is a victory for Ghost IMO. I will add, when I drank the first bottle of Ghost Kim sent me, I was not that impressed. There seemed to be something a little too sharp about it. Could 2 more weeks have improved it? I don't know.

I gave my wife a blind tasting telling her only it was 2 DIPAs. She is a maven....although not nearly as geeky as most mavens.....and not obsessed with it.....I'm looking at you....But her palette is much better than mine.

She did not like the aroma of Ghost. She said it had a sourness to it. She picked out the clean, dry finish and better carbonation of DJ. She also noted the cloudiness of Ghost. She also commented DJ had a better finish...or back end as I called it. Overall, she liked both but gave a slight nod to DJ.

I tend to trust the wife in side by sides because she isn't as biased as I am. Good review.

I agree. The fact that Ghost can hang with DJ is a victory for Parish.

My neighbor split a DJ bomber with me yesterday. It was his first time trying. I shared some Ghost with him a few weeks ago.

I told him yesterday that I thought Ghost definitely had a better smell, and I thought maybe Ghost was better tasting. However, I don't recall if Ghost had a more "boring" aftertaste than DJ.

We both agreed that DJ is damn good and that we should drink it more often.

Interesting comparison. We don't see Double Jack in FL so I cant compare notes.

Honest question, I notice in the second pic that the DJ has lots of carbonation bubbles inside the glass. I've always been told this is indicative of unclean glassware? I know you brew so I figured I'd ask.

Sadly, some of my friends who take their beer far more seriously than I do would send that beer back if it were served to them at a bar.

Because of the potential unclean glass??

Screw that. I'd drink it

Yep, seen it a few times now from the local waxed moustache and/or neckbeard crowd. I asked one about it a few months back and was told about the dirty glasses. His argument was that he was paying top dollar for premium brews at the source (CCB in this case) and his brews should be served in a clean glass.

I later asked a bartender there about it and he actually agreed with the customer and said something to the effect of "if we don't clean our glasses what else are we cutting corners on?"

Again, these people clearly take the beers more seriously than you and I do!

I have never heard this but the glasses are run through a dishwasher. A DIPA should have a head when poured.

I found this....

quote:

How can you tell whether a glass is dirty? Usually a dirty glass will have lots of tiny bubbles adhering to the sides. These are called nucleation sites, and they're usually tiny bits of dirt or food that cause the CO{-2} in the beer to break out of solution. Another sign of a dirty glass will be a complete lack of head on the beer. This is usually a sign of a sanitizer that was not properly rinsed, not an issue with the beer.
