He has no interest in the traditional jock afterlife: coaching or commentating or getting fat. Instead, he’s launched a publishing imprint at Simon & Schuster. A children’s book comes out September 23, followed in October by Jeter Unfiltered, a collection of evocative, documentary-style off-field photographs by Christopher Anderson—and a significant departure for the privacy-conscious icon.

Jeter Publishing, however, is only the first step. In a media landscape where stars are increasingly taking ownership of the means of production—Oprah Winfrey rose from talk-show host to media conglomerate, Dr. Dre went from producer to music mogul, and Beyoncé runs a management company—one option for Jeter is an ambitious media play. After two decades of being content, he’s intrigued by the possibility of becoming a multi-platform content provider. His business pursuits will likely be varied, but they will all be characteristically Jeter: He will be the one in charge.

....

A broken left ankle in October 2012 sidelined Jeter for most of 2013 and accelerated his thinking about the inevitable end of his playing days. He wouldn’t let the injury force him to retire—a grueling rehab allowed Jeter to return this spring—and he would control the announcement of his exit. The year off also gave him time to start considering ideas for his next career. Jeter’s one explicit goal is to own a Major League franchise. “No former player has owned a team in baseball,” he says, his voice rising with a competitive edge. “In basketball, M.J., obviously. But not in baseball.”

Well, we have no way of knowing how much he's really worth (he could have bought Apple in the late nineties, for all we know) but there's a reason why former players don't typically become owners.

For one, even with the salaries top players make, there's still too much of a gap and two, players tend to spend big and Jeter doesn't exactly seem like he's been skimping on living the big league lifestyle.

The Rays are the least valuable MLB team and they are worth 485 million.

Jeters net worth is reported to be around 180 million.

How much (gross) has he been paid over his 20 yr career?

Hundreds of millions?

Has probably been the highest paid baseball player thru endorsements for most of his career.

Never been married. Doesn't have super high living expenses that we are aware of.

Basically if he didn't spend most of his earnings and has had a decent financial manager, he could be pretty close already (to a 300-400 million team).

is he talking about being the sole owner?

otherwise it seems like a pretty big brain fart to forget Nolan Ryan had a stake in the Rangers.

He should just be a GM.

As said before. The price tag for these franchises are a bit high.

If he is worth around 150M. Could he put up 100M and finance 400M (500M team purchase)? I'm guessing some owners have financed purchases and they weren't all done with cash. Didn't Benson get backed by the state and finance most of the purchase of the Saints?

Magic has the money to keep him alive with HIV.

Jeter has the money to keep him alive with herpes.

Not the same.

I don't think so. Magic has a bunch of business ventures like movie theaters and chain restaurants.

Not likely. Magic made boatloads in highly successful business venture after playing.

Or the White Sox. Charles Comiskey had over 1000 hits.

I would imagine Jeter is planning on getting into a number of ventures before trying to buy a baseball team.

26 teams are listed with an individual as principle owner. I have no idea if they own 100% of the stock or not, but I'm willing to be there's a few
