Just bought a remington model 700 SPS Varmint .308 for deer hunting here in Virginia

Need help on a scope, not some amazing marksmen, wouldn't even shoot at anything at a run. Just want enough to take down a deer or punch paper at 200 yards or less.

Went with the heavily lauded Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40

Thanks for the input guys!

Glass is largely a question of personal preference. You can spend as little as $30 to $40 for a scope, up to thousands.

As you are a self-admitted "newb", but have more of an intermediate rifle, I would recommend settling for something safe and middle of the road for a first scope.

Maybe a Burris, Bushnell or Nikon.

Leuopold makes great scopes, but it might nudge out of your price range for this rifle/caliber.

imo probably the best scope for the money out there right now.. but I haven't looked at anything optic wise in a couple of years.

I just know that because my buddy had one and it blew me away, really want to put one on my tikka 22-250

They really are good scopes. I had an old Army issued Leupold spotting scope that was made in Japan and used Nikon glass and it seemed brighter than my current VX4 Ventana. Looking at their Force XR 2.5-8x28 for my GSR.

Looks like it has amazing reviews, I know ordering off amazon for something so delicate is asking for trouble, but with the returns and nikon's lifetime warranty shouldn't be much of an issue. Price seems right, is the the best deal they can be had for though?

Unless you have some awesome firearm dealer I don't think you'll be that deal.

I have 2 Nikon prostaff's and they seem very bright and clear to me. I went with the 3x9x50 just because I caught them on sale for less than $200.

I just might have to buy one of these as I was given a Remington 700 .243 that needs a new scope. It's been 20 yrs since I've hunted deer.
