If there is a problem a large part is recruiting

And there is no easy solution to the problem. You are seeing the same thing in NCAA basketball.

Thankfully we are in a position to have recruiting classes after recruiting classes full of 5 star recruits. Unfortunately a large number of 5 star recruits go to the NFL early. So we end up with 4 & 5 star true freshmen and sophomores playing against 3 & 4 star junior, seniors and 5th year
seniors with tons more experience.

I guess it's a good problem to have but what's the answer? You don't purposely recruit a team full of 2 & 3star players. And you are not going to stop guys from going out early if they are able.

Maybe JUCO is the answer. A mixture of older more experienced players with a couple recruiting classes of 5 star hot shots. IDK but I think this is a problem for a lot of elite programs and has hit LSU the hardest the last few years.

Football isn't about stars.

Lots of good teams do quite well with 3 and 4 star players.

Even among the schools that get 5 star players, we are losing way more players early than the average. Is it the kind of kids we are recruiting? I haven't done the math but our early departures have been from both in state and out of state, so its not just the local kids.

Steve Spurrier only took 1 junior college player his entire time at Florida.

He wanted smart players in his system for 5 years; but, I'm sure he got more than his share of 4 & 5s, too.

That's two good points ( Katy Tiger & Sancho Panzaand) and one dumb pointless observation (geaux.home).

Like I said. I don't know the answer. Just know it's a problem.

Its not even just the early departures, though they do hurt. It is also somewhat the fact that we kinda whiffed recruiting a couple positions in some recent classes in a depth sense, not quality. We have a ton of talent, just not as much talent that is ready to go as we normally have.

I remember when it was rare to see freshmen playing at LSU. Now it is rare to have a veteran squad.

I think Bobby Bowden had the same problem. He gathered blue chip players but didn't recruit his biggest needs, so he had, on paper, decent classes but the team didn't perform.

No we don't, we have very few 5 stars, maybe three tops. The majority of players are 3 and 4 stars.

It all goes back to coaching. If the EXPERIENCED oline doesn't improve the cause for keeping juniors will be even tougher. L. Collins chose to stay and thus far i think his draft status has been hurt. With the emphasis on thus far.

What makes you say his "draft stock has been hurt"? Collins has been killing it so far this year and if anything his stock has improved. NFL guys can watch the film and ignore the team results and focus on the individual player's performance.

It's simple we have great skill players. Les and company have missed on OL and DL recruiting and it has caught up with them. They can lie all they want about it being communication, but they are just physically getting whipped.

If Collins is killing it he is the only one. I thought this new oline coach was supposed to improve things. We are not the only ones with freshman starting. That other school that got our best in state olineman last year has him starting and he is killing it.

Thread is dumb.

Miles consistently has a top 5 recruiting class year in, year out. This team is loaded with talent. We had more talent at every position last week other than QB, IMO. Their defensive front was better, but we didn't exactly call the right plays in the right situations to allow our guys a chance.

If you go off of rivals rankings we do not have a top 5 class every year. Our competition however does.

Maybe more LSU players should not declare for the draft as redshirt sophomores and true juniors if their chances of being drafted in the first three rounds is slim to none. How many careers cut short have we witnessed when another year at LSU could have benefitted them?

Recruiting ranking sites suck. LSU had the number one class last year without a doubt. Shouldn't really even be debatable.

Are you telling me that Rivals and 247 know more than me? Apparently they don't when it comes to evaluating players.
