1)Lucile Ball
2)Carrol Burnett
3)Vicky Lawrence
I'm sure Vicky Lawrence wouldn't make many top 3 lists, but I loved Mama's Family. I could replace her with Betty White and not be too upset. The chick that played Elaine in Seinfeld has been pretty good in some other stuff too. Who ya got?

Joan Rivers is #1 by a thousand miles. The funniest, hardest working, accomplished more for women comedians than any other, etc..

Joan Rivers wasn't even funny. She looked mentally retarded and spent her career making fun of how other people look and what they wear.

Burnett. Lucy was good at being Lucy. Betty White wasn't funny until she because a dirty old lady and Joan Rivers wasn't funny at all. Burnett was 10,000 characters rolled into one.

Ball and Burnett are the easy two picks. They were both gifted comediennes. I would say, just to be an old fart and ruffle some feathers, that Gilda Radner would be my third choice. She just had that ability to make you laugh.

From outside the country I would say pretty much every actress on Ab Fab was funny. Catherine Tate and Karen Gillan both have great comedic timing. Gigi Edgely and Claudia Black have solid comedy chops as well.

In theory Billie Piper could be mildly amusing.

Lucille Ball still kills it.

Those old shows...one of the first on TV - god damn, still hold up because of her.

She was a genius of comedy.

You serious Clark? She hosted the Tonight Show weekly before Leno came in.

Mama's Family was our generation's All in the Family.

But with a female lead...strange, almost dirty comedy show - for its time, it was awesome.

After school, I remember two solid hours (1 of reruns) of Three's Company, Too Close for Comfort...then either Family Ties or Cosby and Mama's Family. Can't remember but Mama's Family was always on around 7pm before primetime.

Ball was a natural. Rivers relied on racey fallbacks

Busted a gut as a kid staying home from school...

Still nothing is better...to this day.

It's pure comedy. Which we really don't get anymore...with everyone trying to be ironic or avant garde or self-aware (that's the new form of comedy.) No effort.
