Kolaches From Houston (pic)

My brother is in town from Houston and he brought us some kolaches. Apparently they are all the rage there. The one on the left is sausage with a little cheese, the one on the right a boudin version.
The bread on the boudin one is a slightly sweet croissant-type. The other one is also slightly sweet and light, Both have a few bits of hot jalapeno.
They were both good, but I would have preferred a less sweet bread and no japs. Texans seem to put too much of them in everything.
Any fans of kolaches here?

Where from? I found a place close to hobby airport that has some pretty good ones.

Glorified pigs in a blanket. I never understood why people go nuts over them. The ones I've had have always been incredibly dry and the meat quality was

We stop in West on the way to Austin sometimes which is where the Kolache craze started I suppose.Kolaches are a traditional Czech food that the original settlers of West brought with them. Most the town of West are of Cezech ancestry and still have the Czech surnames. I like the chocolate filled Kolaches.

Dropping knowledge...The best kolaches are the one's in those small towns that were settled by the Czech's many years ago. I'm a fan of the kolaches at Praseks Hillje down towards Victoria.

Those look like Shipley's kolaches, or some other random donut shop. I think they suck!
One of my H-town brethren will be here shortly to tell you about the other primary Kolache place (Mornings, I think), but I've never been there.
Kolache factory is awesome! Yes, the standard is a glorified pig in a blanket, but the specialty kolaches are amazing.
My kolache breakfast is a sauasage and gravy (breakfast ssg and white grvy) kolache with one plain. But there's fruit, BBQ beef, chicken enchilada, ham & egg, B,E, & chz etc...
And you're right, I had never even heard of them until moving to Houston in 03.

I can't recall the name, but google maps is saying it's called sonny donuts. Doesn't ring a bell, but it's the right location so it may just be under a different name.

The only kolaches I've had are from Kolache Kitchen in BR. I prefer the dessert/fruit flavored kolaches.

Shipleys kolaches hold a special places in my heart but yeah there are many better

I've never had Kolache Kitchen. The ones I've had from various donut shops have not been very good.
I've had some decent ones from Ralph's grocery. I'm not sure if they still do it but they use to offer a few variations. They had some made with more of a bread style dough and some made with what seemed like a biscuit dough.

Don't let Terd see that. Apparently, those aren't real kolaches. Real kolaches are sweet. Those are called something else.

I went to high school in Houston for a while and they had those at breakfast all you can eat...I fricking loved those thing.

That;s what I thought. When I was young you could only get fruit filled or cheese Kolaches. And you could only get them in Central Texas where the Czechs settled.
Also, they need to be eaten fresh. If someone brings you some that are a day old, they can still be good but they won't be as good.
