They will probably need to be replaced or repaired by the time you recoup the energy savings vs cost.

AND

Your home owners insurance is likely to not cover damage. One hurricane and you are SOL.

I think they look great. It's usually the nuevo faux colonial/tudor/whatever houses that are ugly.

Check PosiGen. Panels are rented and includes all maintenance and monitoring and house prep for increased energy efficiency. We are doing it.

try searching this topic on Google. There was long thread (kind of a pissing match, actually) regarding the pros/cons of solar panels on here a few months ago. Pretty good info in it, though, so its worth the effort.

Good friend of mine works for a power company in SC and looked into it and told me you don't save enough money to pay for them, not counting maintenance etc.

You really don't make any significant money "selling power to the grid", and you don't recover much cost so he didn't do it.

I don't know if you can get them to do the energy efficiency without buying the panels, but if you could, that is the way to go.

Can't they make them look more like roof shingle?

I don't know about that, but I do know they need to face the South, preferably. The can face east and west, but south give you the most benefit. So if your house faces the south, you'll have your panels on the front of your roof.

This is probably the way to go. I can get them installed and pay about 5.5 cents / kwh. I am paying 9.9 cents for normal electricity right now.

Posi gen--you rent for less than the cost your current utility bill.

You will more than likely still pay an electric bill, just much smaller.

Will the leap be feasible?
