Ok everyone...dont kill the messenger or the Teacher but this is the response cut and pasted from email a few minutes ago.
"Whoever made this last year, should have made a pattern that is divided by 2. We should have double checked it too. So Sorry!"
I am a five digit number
The digit in the ten thousands place is the next number in the pattern: 56, 28, 14 , _____. The digit in the thousands place is 2 less than the greatest factor of 8.
Seven times the digit in the hundreds place is 49. The digit in the tens place is the fourth multiple of 2. The digit in the ones place is a prime number less than 3.
What number am I?
The answer would be 76, 782
This I know is very anti climatic but has also been very educational... I feel a little better about my ability to sequence numbers... just a little! I will put more later if I get additional info from the teacher. Thanks everybody and have a great weekend!

I was going to say 0, but I feared I would be mocked if incorrect.

Can someone help me here?
the 10,000th place is actually 0.000X
not a whole number.
It's 10,000 is ten thousands place...what is written in the question...
So, 0.

Are we just going down?
The question is worded horribly.
Still 0

The first way doesn't make sense because none of the math makes you go to the accuracty (specific digits). 9/2 = 4.5, not 4.5000.
So, it's probably 4.5. Still doesn't make sense...why even include the 10,000 in the question?
Unless, of course, it's meant to test the sudents' ability for more abstract numbers (for 4th graders).

That is a very odd number pattern. I don't like the way it is worded. The number in the 10,000's place for any number listed there would be zero. Doesn't really seem like a pattern at all.

My guess is they are learning about decimals and the point of the question is more about getting the number of zeros correct on the end and not as much about the pattern

With Common Core - Does it matter if you get the answer correct???
Posted on 9/25/14 at 8:46 pm to Bloodworth
The question is worded horribly but the answer to the pattern is 4.5 which you know... The other info in the question seems to be inconsequential to the actual pattern

Is this like a crossword (crossnumber) clue where you're trying to find a certain digit in the 10,000s space?
I'd still say 0.
I'd still say 0.

The question should have been presented like this... I had some bad info:
I am a five digit number
The digit in the ten thousands place is the next number in the pattern: 36, 18, 9, _____.
The digit in the thousands place is 2 less than the greatest factor of 8.
Seven times the digit in the hundreds place is 49. The digit in the tens place is the fourth multiple of 2. The digit in the one place is a prime number less than 3.

worded terribly. It's not even a question. The digit in the 10,000th place is the next number? No, 4.5 is the next number in the pattern. And it's 4.5000<-
