Looks like you are going to have to do a real investigation instead of hope for dumb selfies. If you have a warrant, is it not reasonable to have them unlock the phone for you? Wouldn't that be part of complying with the investigation?

Give the government access to your phone or the terrorists win.

Is that about right?

There is case law that found a person does NOT have do that.

U.S. v. John Doe, Nos. 11-12268 & 11-15421, D.C. Docket No. 3:11-mc-00041-LAC (11th Circuit Court of Appeals)
In re Grand Jury Subpoena Duces Tecum Dated March 25, 2011
The Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination protects against being forced to decrypt hard drive contents.

“We hold that the act of Doe’s decryption and production of the contents of the hard drives would sufficiently implicate the Fifth Amendment privilege. We reach this holding by concluding that (1) Doe’s decryption and production of the contents of the drives would be testimonial, not merely a physical act; and (2) the explicit and implicit factual communications associated with the decryption and production are not foregone conclusions.”

We've gone to using AES256 NSA Suite B encryption on our products and engineering to safeguard data security. For those that don't know, that's a cipher used for Top-Secret military and data security.

Reading that article is disturbing. Do police even get a token smattering of Con Law as part of their training? It's like they see the constitution as something to be overcome, not respected.

I would not read too much into it. The FBI director is an appointed position. I know this is not the PT Board, but take that for what it is worth.

ETA: With the most recent ruling on cell phone in particular this is not as big an issue as the story or the director (who doesn't investigate $hit) make it out to be.

Riley v. California 9-0 decision for your reading pleasure.

Seeing as how I'm the only person providing controlling case law, yeah I think those of us in the field actually do.

Androids next update is supposed to follow suit.

Obvious statement is obvious, but:

If a pedophile is worried about getting caught, they wouldn't use a phone at all to do their dealings, not even a blackphone.

ETA: Pretty sure you can't use Tor on an iPhone.

ETA2: Nevermind. Onion Browser is on the App Store.

The ironic part is that the avg pedo doesn't think twice about his cell phone... But once he reads this article, this guy just told him which phone he should get. Real smooth FBI
