Has anyone ever been to an upland preserve in Louisiana? Any suggestion on where to go? Not really interested in a european style hunt.

Me and a couple of buddies were talking about booking a pheasant hunt soon. Besides a little woodcock hunting, none of us have ever hunted upland birds.

I haven't kept up with preserve hunts in a number of years so I don't know who is offering hunts and who is not, but if you want to hunt behind dogs wait till it cools down and even better after a frost to kill some briers...

Thats what I was looking at. I found this place called shallow lake, seems like a pretty good deal. half day pheasant hunt is $275 a person. 6 pheasant and 4 chukar a person. and a meal after the hunt. LINK

Yes, I have done it at a few different places...my favorite was Long River Lodge in Mellville...just a top-notch place all the way around...

had a damn good time at a place near Opelousas too, but I can't remember the name...it wasn't as fancy, but was also very enjoyable...

my advice is to hunt quail and not pheasant...watching the dogs work and shooting is what is fun and you can do a lot more of that for the money if you go with the quail...just get them to throw in a couple of chukar and phesant for the coolness when you are going after mainly quail...

ETA: the place that I mention near opelousas is actually near ville platte and is called Bon Amis...damn nice folks...

I hunt Dry Creek Ranch quite a bit in Ragley. I take people out there and we always have a great time, quail/pheasant combo behind dogs is the most fun imo.

I can vouch for it too... I hunted it a few times years ago and it was good for what it was. There was no way you were not going to kill birds.

Do any of these places let you bring your own dog? I have a GSP and hunt Duck, Dove, and Squirrel with him, but would love to see him on some upland birds.

Most will at a reduced price as long as it is unguided....

From what I've read, majority of the places do allow you to bring your own dog. I was considering the same thing, I have 3 GSPs myself, 2 for duck hunting, and one we are training him to trail blood.

Are these places the ones where they release the pheasants? As much as I love hunting pheasant and quail, I won't do that kind.

Way back in the 80s....I was lucky enough to be on some hunts in vermilion parish where la stocked them....and the few survived

We flushed about 6 on 4 quail/rabbit/woodcock hunts....landowner didn't want us shooting them..

His grandson probably got about 5 of them over the years...

God I love pheasants

I took a photo of what I assume was a wild pheasant next to the train tracks north of i-10 on the way to Kinder. This was ~2006.

For sure. It's great for a dog tune up if you were about to leave for Texas on a wild hunt.

As to what someone else asked, yes, it is pen raised birds, but they have big flight pens built inside barns where they can stretch their wings. What you don't shoot they can use call back pens to catch. Birds are running loose everywhere so it doesn't really matter though...

What's an average price range to go on a hunt like this?
