iOS 8 - Leave Group Text Feature Rant

I have been stuck in a 14 person group text for the past two years with buddies from my highschool. What started as a joke slowly became a nightmare.
I rarely contribute to the text, as I live in a different state and hardly see these guys anymore. They love to get riled up over politics and sports, and will constantly text back and forth throughout the day when anything news worthy happens.
It's a huge issue, as my phone is constantly losing battery life due to receiving 200+ texts within an hour. If you ask them to stop, it makes them text even more. Hilarious right?
I've thought about changing my number, but these guys are my friends, so they will get my new number at some point. In which, I will once again be added to the group text.
Lo and behold iOS 8. They announce that you will finally be able to leave group texts! My problems will finally be solved! I was counting down the days for this release.
Immediately after downloading iOS 8, I click on "Leave group text" with a giant grin on my face. It's over! Peace at last!!
Wrong. Shortly after leaving, I receive 10 texts within the minute. What the hell is going on?
Frantically, I continue to delete these frequent messages with haste while trying again and again to leave. Not working. I try muting it. Nothing is working. Panic ensues.
I find out today that this feature only works if everyone in the group text has an iPhone, and if they are all using iMessage.
I'm locked in for life. frick you apple. frick you Steve Jobs.

Block the numbers if you rarely talk to them anyway

I talk to most of them individually. Like I said, they are my friends so I do see them when I visit back home. Hence why I haven't changed my number.

I too was disappointed with that, but the mute feature has been clutch.

Your only options are to either ask them to make a new 13-person group and leave you out (if they don't, you have a-hole friends), or mute notifications on the group text (not sure if this is possible on iOS, may have to switch to Android).

Mute doesn't work for me. I have the crescent moon icon next to the group text, but apparently that is just for looks. Enjoy the peace! Not all of us are so fortunate.

Until a horrific night, when one of the members was inebriated at the bar and decided to bring it back. This was about a year and a half ago.

A work-around would be to go into your address book and set the text tone and vibration to "None" for every member of the group. You'll still see the alerts on your phone but it will no longer vibrate or play a sound every time you get a message from them.
My go-to excuse for opting out of group SMS texts is to remind my friends/family that I'm on an old school plan with a 200-text allowance before I get charged by the message.

To leave a conversation everyone has to be using iOS8 and have iMessage turned on.

Tell your friends to start using Groupme (cross platform app with mute capabilities) or to kindly get lost.

Even though it wont save my battery, it will atleast give me peace.
Obviously I have tried silencing my phone in the past. However, when I get texts that I actually do need to reply to I end up forgetting about them until it's too late.

This has been communicated and thoroughly explained to the group. No chance.

Then I wouldn't be friends with them. They sound pretty inconsiderate and oblivious. You should change number and create a google voice number and give that to them.

It's mainly 6 guys that love to stir the pot. Everyone else will chime in from time to time. But their view is that if one person is suffering, everyone must suffer.
I announced in this group text that there is no escape, and in turn it somehow spun a religious debate. This is why I never contribute.
