Everything you've been thinking but couldn't put into words .

LINK

quote:

Kind of hard to block what seems to be the opposing team portrait most plays.

Yet there the Tigers were with the opening possession against Mississippi State last Saturday, with a record crowd hoping against hope that the previous two tune-up weeks had been dedicated to hiding the new offense that Les Miles & Co. were ready to spring on the SEC schedule.

There was quite a build-up, lots of high-tech stadium gadgetry flashing and blinking and zipping around the strip message boards on the rim of the upper deck.

It’s a new age in stadium entertainment.

But on the field it was still 1985.

quote:

Immediately after that debacle, even without watching the film Miles noted that the Tigers’ defensive effort, such that it was, was complicated because Mississippi State “spread us out more than we wanted.”

Ding-ding-ding-ding!

You think?

Good advice, but it's kinda hard to flush from memory until we play another game.

A-fricking-men. It was painful. The crowd was worked-up in an all-out frenzy pre-game. Then the game started, and life of 100k fans was almost immediately sucked-out.

When we had a QB last year, we had no problems throwing.

Mississippi State’s offense was a thing of beauty. And it wasn’t complicated. But with Bulldogs spread out all over creation, it looked like 15 of 16 of them had to be on the field. It surely wasn’t trick plays. Often as not it ran up the middle.

But with LSU’s defense spread near and far and preoccupied with a seemingly endless array of spread-out Bulldogs, even probes of the middle often found no Tigers at home.

It almost didn’t look fair. The Tigers looked like they were fighting a swarm of gnats.

Miles is right... that if everyone executes perfectly every single time... then you are going to have a successful offense regardless of formation, scheme, or what the defense does.

However, why do you continue to put your personnel in a situation where they have to be perfect?
Why would you do that when there are other alternatives... like spreading the field... that can allow you some room for error and still be successful?

It was fine for Zach Mettenberger last year — he’s a true pro-style quarterback who could drop back in the pocket and throw precision darts from 40 yards out.

Jennings and Harris are not that guy — both of them operated almost exclusively out of the shotgun formation while in high school.

They’re accustomed to starting out in space. They need space. They need receivers finding space.

Exactly.
& it's not just all the defensive players in the middle of the field . It's your own offensive players as well. It's just too congested
