The Los Angeles city council has voted to raise the minimum wage at large hotels to $15.37 (£9.41) per hour.

In a 12-3 vote, the council approved the rise for hotels with more than 300 rooms on 1 July 2015 and for hotels with more than 150 rooms a year later.

The new wage floor would be one of the highest in the US.

It was opposed by the hotel industry, which said it would force worker redundancies. Mayor Eric Garcetti has said he will sign the bill into law.

Coming soon to a hotel near year:

Automated check in service at front desks instead of a person

$30+ a day valet parking and or only one valet attendant on duty

Bell Service? Bring your own luggage to your damn room. Or pay a nominal fee to have it done.

All housekeeping staff will continue to be employed and paid under the table a fraction of the $15/hour, that will not change.

If they're as full proof as the machines at the grocery store I expect about 1 in 3 times it will require the intervention of a human being with a "manager login".

Sorry to disappoint you - but you will still have to look at poor people for quite some time to come.

So you're the a-hole that clogs up the check-in lines at the airport because you can't follow the simple instructions at the kiosk.

"I can't get this machine to work!"

"Sir, your reservation says you're flying Delta, this is the United check in area."

This is Tuba we're talking about. The fact these airlines aren't regulated to share checkin rosters or that the check in machines aren't all linked together for all airlines is a sign of capitalism/corporatism run amok!

With the cost of living in Los Angeles having risen dramatically the last 5 years - in just food and supermarket costs - $8 for a six-pack of Budweiser - not to mention $4.15 for a gallon of gas...

This raise is much needed and well deserved for those workers. People don't tip the maids like they used to or as much as they should.

only for those that are kept in the workforce. those getting the raise will have new responsibilities added. those with little to no experience or lacking work ethics will be let go

Maybe they don't tip like they used to because...

Lucky you.

I fly 2-4x per month, and I have issues about every 10th time i fly.

I try to use self checkout at grocery stores, as they are usually faster than the slooped foreheads checking you out... almost never have an issue.

The three times I have tried self check in at a hotel, all 3 required intervention. ha ha

People in the south are convinced that Seattle is a terrible place to live and that it is full of dumb people.

Why are they targeting just large hotels?

Seems like a odd narrow industry to roll this out in.
