Reading FIGJAMs Ryder Cup stuff made me remember Phil was pretty vocally for golf returning to the Olympics, if I'm not mistaken. I happened to peruse over to check a couple of things out and noticed something pretty crazy.

First off, the Rio Olympics will open August 5th and close August 21st.

Now check this out. 2016 Open Championship: July 21-24. 2016 PGA Championship: July 28-31.

So the worlds top players will hop on a plane to Royal Troon, play the Open, then the following day hop on a plane to New Jersey, play the PGA, then the following day hop a plane to Rio for opening ceremonies.

Two majors back to back? Even if they start the Olympic tournament the following week, thats a lot of big golf in a short amount of time.

Yep it will be a grind for the best players playing in all three tournaments. Can't believe they are going back to back. Should have just moved the US open to May

Exactly, it's a mentally draining sport, especially in Majors, unlike that pussy Soccer crap

What they need to do is move the Ryder Cup back to odd years (where it was pre-9/11) so it won't happen the same year as the Olympics. Would suck to see us win the Gold and then lose the Ryder Cup a month later. Would make me feel like an LSU fan in 2011....

Having two majors back to back is cool for the fans, but I'd rather have a little more spacing.

I dont think its cool. You want to see pros at their best in the Majors. Having two back to back is going to be tough.

Although, if someone manages to go twofer there, GOAT.

Imagine if someone won both the British & PGA....then came away with a few Golds at the Olympics.

Tiger...there's your chance to cement your legacy.

From what I understand, they are only doing a mens and womens stroke play event in 2016. 4 rounds, if three are tied they have a 3 hole playoff then sudden death to determine G/S/B.

How many representatives from each country? If it's only 2, then many of the world's best players will not be playing that week.

Putting Golf Board in your subject will get your threads anchored.

Olympic Rankings
quote:

Qualification will be based on world ranking as of 11 July 2016, with a total of 60 players qualifying in each of the men's and women's events. The top 15 players of each gender will qualify, with a limit of four golfers per country that can qualify this way. The remaining spots will go the highest-ranked players from countries that do not already have two golfers qualified. The IGF has guaranteed that at least one golfer from the host nation and each geographical region (Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania) will qualify. The IGF posts weekly lists of qualifiers based on current rankings for men and women.

So there's no team event?

I've been lazy when it comes to figuring it out what the format will be for Olympic Golf. I just assumed it would be kind of like the NCAA & there would be team and individual events.
