Islam teaches peace. Muslims the world over aspire to live with dignity and a sense of justice. And when it comes to America and Islam, there is no us and them – there is only us, because millions of Muslim Americans are part of the fabric of our country.

He's wrong on this of course, but didn't GWB often say the same thing? Doesn't every national political leader in the world (save for the Israelis) say the same PC tripe?
GWB "Islam is peace" speech
I like the way GWB says "we just had a wide-ranging discussion" and really enunciates the "discussion" as if he's proud of using a big word Will Ferrell caught that and kind of poked fun of it repeatedly on SNL, but it's clearly evident here in the first line of this speech.
Serious question - who else besides Bill Maher speaks out loudly and passionate about Islam and how they are so disproportionately responsible for acts of terror? And since militant Islam is one of the biggest threats to America, why don't conservatives appreciate Maher more than they seem to?

I mean, I guess I can see the thought process by wanting to promote that "war against terrorists" is not "war against Islam" but in a perverse way, constantly beating that drum legitimizes the connection between the two.
At this point, anybody out there that believes we're going to war against Islam and not against scumbag terrorists isn't going to hear the message no matter what anybody says, so why bother?

He is correct. Obviously, there are certain factions of any religion that are radical to varying degrees.
The muslim extremists are like the WBC of Islam.

You make a lot of sense and I agree with almost all of this save Maher. I do agree with him about Islam and speaking out, but conservatives/libertarians are not for his authoritarian beliefs in the govmnt. He's far left, not libertarian, in regards to almost every other political agenda.

Every time BO mentions the word justice I want to bash him in the head with a 9 iron. That has to be the most overplayed word of his entire presidency.

Obama saying this is no problem. He knows we all know it's bullshite but he has to say it anyway. I'm not going to get upset about it.

WBC may be assholes but I don't see them cutting off peoples' heads. The MSM LOVES WBC, it gives them the avenue to shred Christians, although there are probably 40 members of the so called church. Not 40 million cultist bastards wanting to kill you.

What an idiotic statement. Aren't you one of those on here that complain about people making too much hay out of anything Obama says? Yet here you are ridiculing a past President for putting more emphasis than you'd like on the word "discussion".

quote:Not wrong. Especially in terms of political messaging in Autumn 2001. As the Turkish PM said, Obama stepping it up to speak in behalf of Muslims is stupid though.

You might find Pat Condell interesting. The man is brutally frank in voicing his opinions.

I've never seen the WBC used as a platform to "shred Christians".

I frickin despise Bill Maher and love Charlie Rose, but that exchange where Maher gives Rose the real talk about Islam gave me a newfound respect for him I admit it.
You have to admit he's a smug SOB, though.
