Why are chain grocery stores not frowned upon like restaurants?
Posted by runningTiger on 9/24/14 at 3:29 pm05
I try not to shop at whole foods and SAMs when I'm in nola
Used to like rouses but now I hate it. Became a regional chain and quality has suffered as prices have risen
My fave in nola is langensteins then Winn Dixie another regional chain whose quality isn't great but prices less than rouses
In chicago I'm a big Mariano's fan. They've really outdone themselves taking over from Dominics
Anyway why don't food snobs get their pants uptight when they shop at chains for groceries?

Raisin Bran, Jif, Oreos, etc. are the same anywhere you buy them.
And much cheaper at some places.

My favorite "regular" store in BR is Calandros, but I don't mind Matherne's for random items, and it's AG.
Fresh Market and Whole Foods just flat out have a better selection on certain items than local stores. (Alexander's might be good, but it's like 20+ miles from me)
I am not above Albertsons or WD for random items that don't matter where they're from.
I haven't been to a WalMart in months, and haven't bought food items in a WalMart in like 2-3 years. I don't even care enough to hate the company; I just hate being there.
ETA: Produce comes from produce stand, which is plenty local.

Common sense buddy…you need some.
There are typically only a handful of grocery stores to choose from…more often, the chain is much better than the local.
As an example, Canseco's in Mid-City sucks…the produce is ALWAYS expired…they don't run it efficiently…
Fresh Market off St. Charles is a very nice store but the prices are INSANE…they do not have the economies of scale that the larger stores do.
Also, we just had a thread on here about acceptable chain restaurants…I would most certainly say Whole Foods is more than an acceptable chain.

well for boxed items, they are the same no matter where you buy them
but for meats and veggies, it depends on the quality
I get most of my meat and veggies directly from local farmers, either from farmers markets or their farm stores, or a local COOP
but I'll buy from big chain stores as well if the quality looks good

I shop at Rouses because its convenient and they have everything I need. I'll go to Whole Food for some things when needed.
I dont really look at prices. Im not one of those people.
I dont even know of any non-chains(is this only for a singular building establishment?). Zuppardo's i guess. It's outdated and the owner is a dick.

I'm just looking for organic, gluten free products, and free range animals. The locals can't provide me with the items I need. Living with gluten allergy is no joke but yet these local guys are laughing.

Whole Foods and Rouses are all I need

I find this anywhere. Local, chain, whatever.
I've just succumbed to my multi-store grocery trips.

Never understood people who don't look at prices
I pretty much base my diet on what's for sale
Adds up over time and that money goes straight to stocks while will accrue over time in such a way that eating lentils instead of steak will lead to tens of thousands
My family is friends with the zuppardo family
Always thought they were nice

i didnt mean it like that. I will take advantage of a sale on protein

I frown on all grocery store chains not HEB/Central Market.
Kroger sucks, Fresh Market is a joke and honestly don't know how they stay in business here in Houston, Whole Foods isn't good for anything other than ready made stuff for single white wimminz, and even then, woof.
If you don't have an HEB, I feel sorry for you.

Interesting. I can't imagine not finding everything I want/need at my local Kroger.
In response to others:
WF is that it is very expensive and you can't get "normal" things that most people want like the things I mentioned above.
I also find that local independents are dingy and/or dirty and not well maintained.

HEB, Specs, and breakfast tacos are the only things I miss about living in Houston.
