On Sept. 24, the Pentagon revealed that F-22s dropped bombs on militant facilities. The missions represent the F-22’s combat debut, eight years after the sophisticated jet entered front-line service.

I think it's crazy that we've had these $100 million jets for 8 years and are just now getting to play with them.

They've already been doing air to air though, right?

I can see a reason for them flying top cover. The chance of somebody trying to intercept the strike package are pretty remote, but you can't be too careful. Using them to drop bombs sounds like a waste. I guess some wing commander wanted his boys to be in on the fun, too.

In the Middle East, too. You must have forgotten the surprise the Iranian F-4 pilot had when they tried to intercept one of our drones.

It says combat debut. Pretty sure dogfighting qualifies as combat

Don't worry Drew, the F15 still holds the title for now.

A wall of eagles followed by a couple raptors spells certain death for the opposition.

Great idea. Let's use the f22, which we can't make anymore new ones and only produced a fraction of the original purchase order, as bomb trucks. The f16, f15, and the carrier based hornets can run bombs better and cheaper. Jesus.

I am pretty sure we have not had any dogfighting incidents since the late 80's early 90's.

F22s are primarily A2A aircraft with A2G capabilities. They were used because they were flying into heavily fortified S-300 air defenses and Syria does have an air force of around 300 jets. The risk of getting painted by ground radar or by a Russian MiG justified their use. Even though Russia and Syria were complicit in allowing us fly-over, there was no way to know what was going to happen once in the air.

Ugh.. That was part of the mission they were designed to accomplish.
