Wireless router: What percentage of wired speed is normal?

I recently moved my modem and router (Asus RT-N66R) to a more centralized location within the house. Since then I was getting 1-5 Mbps. Assumed it was a Cox issue (recently changed to DirecTV) until I wired directly into the modem last night and got 45-50 Mbps. Talked to Asus this morning and they got it up to 20ish and told me that it could take up to an hour to see full results. I ran a speed test about 30 minutes later, before I ran to work, and it was still roughly 20 Mbps.

Is a 50% loss of speed normal from wired to wireless? If not, does anyone know how to fix it?

Out of a possible 900Mbps?

ETA: looks like your wireless card can't handle the speeds your router pushes..If it is the one you listed, you MAY get in the 70s

When you say that, do you mean the internet he pays for can go up to 900Mbps? or is that some weird number that means something completely different? I was wondering because I was just going to get a N router instead of AC because I only get 50Mbps down. I still don't understand routers. Most people don't get over 100Mbps but buy AC1750's and such.

No..I mean his router can connect to an object at 900Mbps..It can then transfer 25Mbps(avg Cox) to him via that 900...Thats a rough way of putting it

But isn't a N router dual band? Meaning that the 900 is more than likely 450/450. He would only use one channel at a time. Even if he used only one channel at 450, he is still running only 25Mbps, well under 450. I guess I'm just not understanding.

If it were to get in the 70s, how would that be reflected in my overall download speeds?

If I may speculate, It wouldn't have any effect on % drop. It would just be faster. The router doesn't pick the speed it just relays it from the ISP. IIRC

You probably have a Gigabit switch at work...It connects you at 1000Mbps...Your internet is probably 25Mbps...You get that 25 because your network can handle 1000...The 1000 comes in handy when you are transferring on more of an internal level...

His card also seems to be only single band, so he will never get the transfer speed he should...Getting 20 speeds on a 25 Cox line sounds like a good day

Yeah we are 1Gb. I get 30 down from speedtest.net but I always thought it was that way because of bandwidth from other employees using it.

At home I pay for 25Mbps from Cox and get 26-27 Mbps down in actual speeds. We are FTTH though.

This is your outside speed...Your internal would say 1000...

Ops outside is 50 and he gets 1-2...

technically isn't it now 20 on a 50?

Am I not going to get an increase on performance with the boost?

You could have 90Mbps from Cox, but as long as your PC connects at 39, you are only going to get 39

Under Local Area Connection it says speed: 1.0Gbps

So at home it says 54Mbps under the same settings but I know that I'm not getting that or pay for that.

You are connecting to the router at 54....

I don't expect my internet to be 144..I just want to get that 18.57 as fast as I can...
