The new rules would allow garbage collectors to inspect trash cans and ticket offending parties if food and compostable material makes up 10 percent or more of the trash.

The Seattle city council vote on the new rules was 9-0.
I wonder if schools will be subject to these new laws? I have never understood why schools do not donate the unused food to local charities/homeless shelters.

I'm sorry, are they going to get to make a judgment call on 10% or what?

Are they going to maintain the contents of the trashcan separate and uncontaminated so that you can challenge the fine against you?

Holy fricking shite, they are going to give garbage men the power to fine people?

But I guess thats not much worse than the cops who are writing tickets

Their justification is that it's okay because it's only a $1 fine and they hope a warning procedure will be implemented.

They say this all about community outreach to encourage composting.

Yea - this isn't going to end up a clusterfrick at all.

I honestly hope that every single person who gets fined $1 challenges the civil fine. Make the city individually maintain the evidence leading to the fine, and force them to take you to trial.

The waste of government resources will be colossal, and I will love it.

It probably is in alot of areas, but Seattle is probably the biggest boomtown in the country right now. Might be behind Houston.

The place is killing it. Cranes in the sky in all areas of the city and people trying to move in like crazy. So on that front, they are doing something right.

I go visit family up there from time to time and they do have some strange laws, etc. I think if you don't bring you own recycled bags into the grocery store you get charged a fee or some crap like that.

And yes, they are big on seperating their trash. Compost, regular recycle, and regular trash all have their own bins.

My friend re-did his flower bed last summer and it cost him a small fortune to get the old dirt hauled away because it had to go to a compost/recycle facility.

I have to agree. It's sad really. Such a beautiful area but I'd never live in that liberal shithole.

It will be glorious to watch. Don't they have a communist mayor or something? Not a PT communist, like an actual communist.

Yep. Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and Seattle are all places that only wish they had the collective intelligence of the South.

I assume you use technology mostly created in the South and never Intel, AMD, google, Apple, Microsoft, HP, Cisco, Adobe, SanDisk, Nvidia, EMC, vmware, Amazon, F5, ebay, or PayPal.

Do they really expect garbagemen to dig through every can before they dump it?
