Building a house and will have a music room for guitar, drums, etc. Have an iMac to play music, and will need a good set of affordable speakers. In the past those 4 speaker/subwoofer sets have always sounded distorted when turned up too high. Right now, I'm using one of those sound towers, but it doesn't go loud enough. I also don't really need 4 speakers, but do need a subwoofer either separate or built in. Thanks!

I bought an apple airport and use that to transmit music from my imac to my stereo through an external DAC. All you need is an integrated amp and two floor standing speakers. You don't need a sub if you buy three way speakers.
Airport, DAC, with imac in the reflection.

If you are building, use transducers in the walls.

Entirely dependent on the bass extension of the 3 way speaker and in nearly all cases a 3 way speaker is not going to go down to 20 hz or below. It also makes placing the subwoofer properly in the room nearly impossible.

Mine claim 38-30k response with the crossover at 3k, but they are classified as two-way which I didn't know. I guess I don't know wtf three way means.

They reproduce music just fine to me.

I'm sure they are fine unless you listen to pipe organ music or something with extremely low bass extension.
