Thinking about taking a car trip there with the wife in November. I've never been there and wondered is it comparable to the smokies? Things to do?

It's OK. I had a decent time for a couple of days but wouldn't stay longer than that. Kind of cool to check out the old spas and we spent a day drinking at the bier Garten and walking around downtown. We were already in the area though. Not sure I would drive there from South LA.

November's late. Better to go in October when the fall foliage is peaking. If you have to go in November, you could spend a weekend hanging out and enjoy it.

We lived in LR from 1990-1997 and always drove down Hwy 7 to HS in the fall--spectacular scenery there.

I like to take scenic pics and wondering if there are some interesting scenic views along the way to photograph?

Nay. Pretty lame city. Arkansas has some beautiful places and Hot Springs isn't one of them.

Take a drive in the Ouachita Natl. forest, not too far from HS. November is at the tail end of the fall foliage season, but it's an awesome place just the same.

Lake Ouachita is one of the cleanest and most beautiful lakes I've ever seen, and that includes Tahoe. Lake Hamilton is a giant party lake if you're more into that.

Hot Springs is pretty fun, horse racing season is over but the casino is still open. Downtown is pretty nice with the hot spring bath houses and some pretty nice restaurants.

It's good to keep this in context. North Louisiana and South Arkansas are the exact same state. Hot Springs is the more historical/outdoors version of Shreveport/Bossier City.

Really, never been. So one has to drive further north for mountains?

Spent the past weekend at Mountain Harbor Resort on Ouachita and it was awesome.

Tons of trails to hike with great views from the cliffs.

The water is crystal clear and lake is wide open.

This is the reason to go to HS (that is, when Oaklawn is closed). frick the bathhouses, the duck rides and downtown HS.

Hot Springs is right on the southeast edge of Ouachita National Forrest and the Ouachita mountains, there are some nice hiking trails on the north part of town you can overlook Hot Springs on. In the forest there's some pretty sick mountain biking trails.

Most of the actual mountain region is in north Arkansas, but you do have pretty close access around Hot Springs to the Ouachita's and "mountainous" terrain, although I wouldn't go as far as calling them mountains.
