Great segment on Last Week Tonight about Miss America Pageant and Scholarships
Posted by Pectus on 9/23/14 at 9:02 am00
The clip: LINK
They claim to be the number one provider for scholarships for women in the world, which is true. The 45 million, not so much.
John Oliver and the writers of Last Week Tonight give them credit for providing these scholarships, but do not think it's fair to give it to women who only fit the mandatory requirements of the contestants: 1) unmarried and 2)not nor never been pregnant.
Here we are to discuss the merits of the pageant and the opportunities it provides.
I have to deal with a lot of scholarships, being I am a student in graduate school. I have to say, that some of these scholarships are a lot more segregating than the Miss America guidelines. Many scholarships have an intended target and purpose. If you don't fall into that demographic or timeline you're stuck. For instance, one that I can get on is one meant for PhD graduate students in the last year who have nothing but their dissertation to write. The thing is, it's given out by the grad school, so you have to compete across all departments. That means you have to prove that your project is worthwhile among all science dissertations, arts, and others. So you have to write your proposal in a way that everyone can understand what your topic is, what you're trying to solve, how you're going to do it and why it's important.
Miss America seems a little easier than that, albeit similar.
I for one think the awarding committee in any scholarship program has the right to determine who the scholarship is geared towards.
All I have to say to that is, women and minority students have some of the most handsome scholarships in my department. I am OK with that. They are really good students.

Because it's not fair. We need the government to enforce our morals.

You don't think people should have and share opinions?

Everyone has opinions, some are good some suck balls. When someone shares an opinion that is the latter, they should expect to be criticized for it.
But that's just my opinion.

Last Week Tonight has turned into a pretty good show - much better than The Daily Show in my opinion. I'm hoping they get all the scholarship numbers and show how much Miss America actually gives out in scholarship money. It's no where near what they claim.

Hogwash! Everybody knows that you have to be fair (according to my nebulous definition) when choosing how to distribute YOUR money

That's my point.
The segment was really good in that it broke down a lot of what the Miss America pageant is about.
It fails in its last point...but I a not sure if it was satirical or not. I guess their point is the body and decisions of women don't necessarily make them bad candidates for scholarships.
Their main point should have been there needs to be more scholarships for women if women don't want to get money for school based on their looks decisions.

The big point is that the 45 million figure they throw out is basically a big lie.

They make some heavy Left statements on that show at times and try to claim it as fact (the bogus 97%-of-researchers-think-Global-Warming-is-real skit comes to mind).

They aren't attempting to impose anything. There was no call for governmental action. All they did was show that Miss America was deceptive in their claims about giving away $45 million in scholarships and pointed out that it's messed up that the group giving the most scholarship money to women is a beauty pageant instead of an academic group. Then they posted links to other groups you can donate to. Please enlighten me as to how they are imposing their beliefs on you.

It's not like Oliver told Miss America who it could donate money to. He just said that he thinks the manner in which they do it is bullshite. He's entitled to his opinion, and people are entitled to share that opinion.
I don't, but I don't see the issue here.

The point at the end is that group giving the most scholarship money to women does so based on their bodies and not their minds. They were asking the viewer if that fact upsets them and if so they provided links to other scholarship groups the viewer can donate to. Not sure how that is going over people's heads.

Settle down, Francis. After I posted that I realized how it was wrong in this topic and changed it while you were writing your rant.

To be fair, you believe anyone who doesn't believe what you believe is bullshite. You're the most opinionated bullheaded narrowmnded person on this board.
I mean if I'm being honest.

your comment is rich because if i were so narrowminded, then there wouldn't be such a large history of me having completely opposite viewpoints
i mean there is ample data that is floating around cyberspace. i don't hide from my past, but you can't ignore my past, either
