What is the life span of a smoke detector?
Posted by theantiquetiger on 9/22/14 at 7:31 pm00
My house is 7 years old. I have 9 smoke detectors. I changed all the batteries in them in mid-August. Two weeks later, one starts to beep already (I figure it was a bad new battery). I change it and it started beeping again yesterday.
I changed it out completely, but now I am wondering if I should just change all of them.

Are they the original smoke detectors?
I went to a fire-fighting school a few years ago and after seeing what fires can do inside a home and how fast they spread, I changed my current smoke detectors, added some, and put two extra fire extinguishers in the house. Better to be safe imo

I don't think you can legally dispose of them due to the radioactive americium within. Good luck.

Yes, the smoke detectors are 7 years old, hard wired with battery back ups.
I have one in each bed room and one in each hallway

Most you replace every 10 years.

I think the fire marshall's association reccomends that you change them every 8-10 years...of course, I have no patience for that kind of shite malfunctioning, so if I had one that was beeping, it would be gone...
9 detectors is a hell of a lot to change at once, so I would probably just start replacing a couple per year...

I dont know, but that beeping of low battery will last for eternity and ALWAYS start at 2:30 AM

I think Home Depot has some 5 packs for a good price. The carbon monoxide ones are the ones that get expensive

Maybe check the backup battery for your alarm system
If it's bad or unplugged it could cause them to chirp
It always chirps late at night bc the temperature cools down and the batteries become slightly weaker in the cooler temp

They usually last until the battery happens to die when I am hungover.

Only if they are an ionization detector. Photoelectric are fine to dispose of. Plus, an individual can dispose of ionization detectors, whereas a company must report them.

Ten years. My house is 11 years old and they are starting to go. I just changed one out the other day. Not planning on spending 200 to replace them since I'm trying to sell the house right now.
