There's absolutely no logical excuse for her not to interview the neighbor. She was begging to talk. The detective couldn't have someone else interview her? A street cop? Anybody? That was shoddy police work.

O I agree, especially if this was a real investigation. I just think that she was the only investigator that seemed to, for the most part, have an ability to see through the BS— the sole purpose of neighbor was to provide BS for Amy. Again, in the real-world, it would be negligent to ignore her, but Fincher made the detective more competent than most of the characters. From the detectives perspective, there were a few reasons why she may not have been rushing to talk to the neighbor.

1.Nick seemed legitimately confused about the neighbor being his wife's "best friend." This was at at at time when he wasn't really a suspect, and this reaction was quite genuine ( for good reason).

2. Amy and the neighbor were completely different on every level. Before knowing Amy's grand plan, it seemed unlikely that they were friends given that they were complete opposites and Amy seemed to be a somewhat of a social recluse in the small town.

3. The detective told the neighbor that she would talk to her in 30 minutes yet the neighbor had a reason why that wouldn't work (bath time for her kids). She only wanted to present such crucial information on her time; it's easy to see why the detective didn't find her information that important to pursue.

Again, the detective—whether best real-world investigative practices or not—seemed quite good at disregarding the BS (e.g., didn't get caught up in Nick's "smile" for the camera) so ignore the neighbor was actually a good decision from the viewers perspective. Maybe Fincher was trying to convey that.

It was only good because it was beneficial to the story.

Just saw it. Really good movie...8/10 for me. Figured the wife was up to something from the beginning....she seemed like a weird character from the start. Didn't know she was that damn crazy though.

The score is brilliant. Really, reeeeeally good. It sets the mood throughout the movie and keeps you on the edge of your seat. In many ways, for me, it made the movie.

Agree 100%....that's because Trent Reznor is the fricking MAN. Reznor, Atticus Ross and Fincher are a three headed monster in film these days (Social Network, Girl w/Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl). And don't forget Reznor's work on the Lost Highway soundtrack.

7/10 ... most people who aren't thrilled with the movie understand that it's not about her getting away with murder/other crimes ... we get the "it's about the relationship between them" bit ... but you can't suspend all reality ... the video evidence of her rape is 30 seconds over how many days? ... she got a razor of some kind while strapped down? ... she drives straight home covered in blood? ... c'mon ... i didn't read the book, but it seems like the book was written for the specific reason of being made a movie ... it's certainly not oscar worthy, though the actress playing Amy should get some consideration ...

Fair enough. IMO, her performance was the best thing in the movie.

Despite already knowing she was faking her death due to an unintended spoiler, I very much enjoyed the film. My only criticism would be the ending. I felt like I watched 30 minutes of really nothing happening and with no conclusion. To make that plot work, one of the two needed to die or be put in prison. I simply could not buy into the possibility of them staying together.

I liked the ending more on my second viewing. And I thought it was perfect after reading the book.

I feel like it had so much more potential though. A second climax could have been the couple trying to outwit one another to see who would end up in jail or who would die. Both had so much dirt on the other. I can't buy into the idea of them spending the next 20 years in a home together wondering when their spouse would kill them. The husband could have killed her with pills and made it look like she committed suicide.....something to end a relationship that had to end.

Nick isn't a killer. He just doesn't have that in him at all. And he is trying to pin her, but she wins with the pregnancy. He can't let his son be stuck with her.

Possibly. But that'd be a four hour movie.

The forgotten victim in the story. Guy is a registered sex offender (which can pretty much ruin someone's life) that Affleck's character could have exonerated.

Also, once Nick was finally catching on to the fact that the whole thing was a frame job, he or his lawyer should have thought to have a DNA test done on the pregnancy test.

He still believed she was pregnant with his child. Not hard to believe when she had asked about having a kid.

And the registered sex offender is interesting. In the book, she dropped the charges completely for what it's worth.

So I've heard this movie will make me terrified of being in a relationship.

Worth going see?

Finally saw tonight. I enjoyed the hell out of it while I was watching it, but had a bad taste in my mouth leaving the screening. I can let some plot holes slip, but I just can't accept that every character involved would basically give up and let her get away with it. Specifically, I don't buy that Detective Boney wouldn't investigate further since she is a cop and knew for a fact that this was staged.

The ending was ultimately too convenient for me, but I really did have a great time watching it. Pike and the score deserve Oscar consideration and potentially Fincher depending on the competition. Props to Tyler Perry as well.

Cop hierarchy sucks in the real world. Period. Once the feds have it, it's gone. I know that cops never give up in comedies after they lose their guns and badges, but the real world isn't like that.
