I understand most all penalties, every now and then an obscure one comes up, but can someone please explain the "receiver was covered up at the line of scrimmage" penalty?

It happened in the Bama-Florida game late, and they threw the flag on a wideout? Usually when it is called it is on a tight end, that I have seen anyways. But Florida had a guy lined up in the slot that drew the penalty on Saturday.

I have never understood it and I am wondering if I am alone.

the slot guy was on the LOS and another WR to his outside was also on the LOS, one had to be off the ball

So, kind of the opposite of too many men in the backfield?

Right. Watch the next time they motion a TE from one side of the line to the other. The WR will back off the line.

Probably the check bounced from the Tide athletic dept.

In short, there are two ways to be an eligible receiver. Either:

1. You are in the backfield. This includes running backs and WRs lined up off the line of scrimmage.

2. You are the most outside lineman (this includes anyone on the line). In the picture below, the TE is eligible because the WR to his left is off the line of scrimmage. And the slot WR is eligible because he is off the line of scrimmage. If he was on the line of scrimmage, he would be ineligible because there is a "lineman" outside of him.

This situation you gave with a tight end being covered would mean that the WR on the left is on the line of scrimmage. That would mean the tight end is no longer on the end of the line, making him ineligible.

I get that. And I am starting to understand the rule a little. But why not call it "too many men on the line of scrimmage"? Why do they use the term "covered up"?

Not that difficult. Only the 2 players on the ends of the LOS are eligible receivers.

There is no such thing. You can put 10 on the line if you want. The "covered up" penalty is if a "covered up" player goes out for a pass.

There can never be too many men on the line of scrimmage. If everyone was on the line, it would just mean that only the two widest players would be eligible receivers.

There can however be too few players on the line of scrimmage.

Why do they use the term "covered up"?

Because you can have more than 5 men on the LOS no problem. You can't have anyone who is covered move past the LOS on a passing play though.

you can have as many on the line as want, but they aren't eligible to catch a pass or go down field on a pass play

TigerintheNO, volsfan, boom, saintsfan - Appreciate the feedback, that makes sense. Just hard for me to wrap my head around it. Cue dumb bammer jokes.

It's really a rule to help the defense and the officials know who the eligible receivers are

Yeah, I was just thinking it gives an advantage to the D. I am assuming also that it is a player penalty - forgetting to step off the line/get on the line- versus a formation penalty.

yep. That is why you will often see receivers on the edge point at the line judge to verify that they are eligible. (They will point and the ref will either nod or tell him to move back or forward)

You'd be surprised. I've had to tell coaches that the formation is illegal many times. They're thinking, "They're receivers and a tight end, of course they're eligible receivers". I've heard that WAAAAYYYY too many times from professional coaches that should know better.
