Question about the running game

Since Miles is in love with running the ball why does he design plays to get the ball to the play makers in the open field instead of running right into that pile of shite all the time? Don't you think on first and goal on the 2 yard line he should have tried running wide at least 2 out of the 4? I thought LSU has a lot of speed.
