Verizon to Straight Talk, Can it be done?

I've read several forums and haven't found a clear answer yet. To make matters worse most of the threads date back to 2013 so I'm not sure how reliable they are today.
Can I take an S5 or Note III type Verizon phone and have it activated on straight talk? If so would the phone keep it's 4G speeds or be straight 3G? TIA

Typically yes. Newer Verizon phones will work on the HSPA AT&T network. This means you will get "4g" but not LTE. It will be between Verizon 3G and LTE. I've done it with the DROID DNA.

So you take a Verizon phone and use one of Straight Talks At&t sim cards?

Correct. Just make sure the phone you're using supports the following. You can check here.
WCDMA 850/1900 (This is AT&T HSPA or 3G)
GSM 850/1900 (This is AT&T 2G)
There's an outside chance you'll get LTE in some areas if the phone supports Band 4 (1700 MHz). Verizon and AT&T overlap on this band with LTE coverage. I can't confirm this will work though.
