In the market for a new shotgun. Only requirements are semiauto, budget of $1,000 and able to shoot 3.5" shells. Using it for ducks and the occasional goose hunt. Sbe2, maxus and extrema2 are a little out of my price range. Any ideas?

Shop around for a used sbe2.

Eta: Franchi's are nice too. But it's hard to beat a benelli.

Why? What will you use 3.5" for? IMO buy a quality semi 3" or save longer and get a better 3.5"

I make an annual goose hunt in Canada and most of the guys I go with shoot 3.5. 3" sufficient for geese?

I've shot geese in Canada several times. Had no trouble killing geese way out w/ 3" #4 Kent Fasteel and Winny HiVel (all 1460 fps+). Please dont believe all that crap about 3.5" and big shot. Most of that thought process is based on old slower ammo which bounced off geese way up. If the fast stuff bounces, you are prob shooting too far. If you want to shoot 3.5 knock yourself out, but dont do it because you think you "have" to.

i have a sbe h&k model. i went thru the 3.5" for geese phase. hi brass 3" is sufficient if you can put the pattern on them. 3.5" has A LOT of inefficiencies. if you really do need to deliver more payload (like geese sometimes call for) get a 10 ga. 10 ga will shoot circles around a 3.5" 12 ga.

That's a bit of an exaggeration on 3.5" 12ga. 10ga will be more efficient load vs load in terms of patterning but there are vastly more tools available for 12ga shotguns so there isn't a payload that a 3.5" gun can't deliver with good pattern density. Then there's the velocity advantage.

KR,

What's the difference in the regular sbe2 and the American version? Other than $700...
