I had turned on Powell a bit but damn, he's really likeable and come across as incredibly moderate. He talked a bit about how far right the Republicans have gone over the past 16 years, etc. I wish Bill would have hammered him over his role in the bullshite selling of the Iraq WMD war, etc. but perhaps that was a precondition of the interview.

High point for me was Powell talking about how Obamacare is essentially the same as Dole's plan in 1996 and Romney's plan in MA.

The Good General speaks with America's best political humorist

quote:

The remark came during a pre-taped sitdown with HBO’s Bill Maher, which aired Friday evening. Sec. Powell expanded upon his firm support of the president by declaring that his fellow Republicans have created a culture of staunch opposition to all things President Obama.

I see this talking point all the time, yet it really isn't backed up by facts. Dole did not have a healthcare plan similar to Obamacare (in fact, that is an outright LIE by Powell), and Republicans stood in stalwart opposition to HillaryCare.

If anything, republicans have lost their courage on the national level, nominating moderate after moderate. Who was the last fiscally conservative republican to be nominated for president? It's been awhile.

Republicans used to be unified in supporting a tough police force, heavy spending on the war on drugs, etc. Now there is a significant wing who questions those initiatives.
Colin Powell is similar to people like Vegas Bengal. They themselves have grown more leftist, yet instead they see it as the party growing more right. It's not true.

I agree with you that the presidential nominees have been moderate, but the culture of eliminating moderate Republican reps for tea party candidates, etc. is undeniable.

The culture of not working with Obama on anything (when Gingrich worked with Clinton a TON to achieve great things) is undeniable.

The Republican congress under Newt was fantastic.

Clinton was not nearly as liberal as Obama. I guarantee you that Obama would NOT have signed the '96 welfare reform.

To be fair, Americans in the 90s were far more conservative than Americans of today, so Clinton was simply acting on behalf of the populace. An explosion in dependent single mothers, economically vulnerable folks, and millennials who are super super liberal (young voters in 80s and 90s were conservative), has allowed the leftward shift.

Let us also not forget that Dole was not exactly popular with republican voters.

Clinton was also more willing to work across the aisle, especially when Republicans gained control of Congress. Obama can't lead or compromise, it's his way or no way and Republicans can't go along with that. They have passed numerous bills in the House that were compromises and the Senate won't put them to a vote. Democrats have been way more unwilling to compromise than Republicans have.

Obama wishes he was half the president that Bill Clinton was. If Republicans gain the Senate Obama won't compromise..he'll do everything he can via executive order and bitch and scream about Republicans in Congress not doing what he wants.

Clinton worked with the pubs and Obama hasn't. The last time as a whole Americans were happy with the way the country was being ran was when both sides worked together. Obama has always been his way or no way. I think it is to late for him to try and work with the pubs now. Clinton will be much better at this, and I look forward to her doing so and bringing the country back together. The party has moved to the left too much for me, but I look forward to Clinton fixing that.

Is she going back to the Senate? How does that work as far as seniority goes?

I hope goes back to hell where she came from. I'd like to see her uppercutted into a pit of spikes, Mortal Kombat style.

oh really?

R moderates are a lot like D moderates,, they support the status quo of big govt. Powell seems to work hard at keeping himself relevant to the progs that like using his agenda. A shame he won't point out how similar they are to his former party.

Powell is a. phony. He never once indicated any interest in a liberal politician, let alone one as Far Left as Obama. Powell is just like Tony Dungy. A black dude comes along, and they let skin color trump everything they claimed to stand for the past 15 years.

PS - HRC would be a disaster. It would be like electing Eleanor Roosevelt President. Only difference is, Eleanor actually cared about other people, while HRC is a self-centered bitch.
