I'm sure this had been discussed before but I searched and couldn't find a discussion. I'm looking into getting a new gun soon for concealed carry. I'm stuck between several options and wanted your input on what you currently carry.

I am considering either a small .38 revolver or a compact .380 as my top choices. I haven't thought much about other options due to size. I took my dads small .38 revolver out a few days ago to see how I liked it and it was fine but having only 5 rounds (and double action) concerns me. I don't have much experience with .380s other than a Bersa that I had as a teenager which was a horrible gun but I know there are good ones out there.

What do you reccomend carrying and why?

I have a S&W shield 9mm and a Ruger LCR .357 for my concealed carry. The 9 has a little more arse behind it than the .380. I shot an LCP 380 and I find the shield more enjoyable to shoot. The .380 had a pop to it.

You say you don't care for the revolver, .357 means business son. Frick that double action hate

If you want a small light semi auto get a smith and wesson shield 9mm

I wouldn't get a .380. There are too many small 9mm options out there to limit yourself to the puny, weak, anemic .380

For a revolver ( ) get something chambered in .357. Even if you want to carry .38's, .357s generally have a little more weight to them and are easier to shoot. The option is there to stuff magnums in it if you so choose. The ruger sp101 would be my choice, but it will be substantially heavier than other small revolvers. It will also be much easier to shoot. Smith and wesson air weights are great if you practice enough to use them well. The recoil is nasty, but they do shoot well in the hands of someone who can hang on.

The ruger LCR .357 is a fantastic little revolver and I'm not sure why anybody would buy an air weight smith anymore. The ruger has a better trigger and the option for magnums if you can handle it.

xrockford,
What you carry is to a large degree going to be determined by your experience w/ guns, how you want to carry the gun, and what your comfort level is. I wouldn't recommend that your primary cc gun be a 380. Although I don't want to get shot by a 380, the 9mm is a better fight stopper and many are not much bigger than most 380's. If your only option is pocket carry your gun, then you'll prob end up w/ a 380 or a snub nose 38 Spec +P. Some of the smaller 9mm's can be pocket carried in some, but not all pants. If, OTOH, you can carry outside the waistband or inside the waistband, I'd suggest a 9mm. The DAO revolver, usually in 38 Spec +P, is always a good choice for concealed carry, especially for the less experienced. If you get a DAO revolver in 357 Mag, you'll prob end up carrying it w/ 38 Spec +P rounds; most find it very challenging to shoot 357 Mags well in a snub nose airweight revolver.

Pocket guns: Lotsa folks carry these guns as a backup. OTOH, there are times one may have to use a pocket gun as the primary weapon. Good ones in this category would include the Ruger LCP, Kahr CW380, S&W Bodyguard and Kahr P380. For the revolver fan, a sub nose 38 Spec such as the S&W J frame and Ruger LCR are good choices. My pocket gun is a Kel-Tec P3-AT and I've had good results w/it, but that hasn't been everyone's experience.

Inside Waistband Carry: I like 9mm single stack mag guns in this category and there are a lot of them. Kahr CW9/PM9/P9, Ruger LC9, Springfield XDS, S&W M&P Shield, Bersa BPS9, Sig Sauer 250, Kimber Solo and Beretta Nano are some that come to mind. For those who want a 45 ACP, the XDS and CCW 45 would be good choices. For those willing to adequately learn the SAO platform, I'd throw in the Sig 938 as well as a reliable 1911 (either Officer or Commander size).

Outside Waistband Carry: To me this is where the double stack mag guns shine. In this category I'd include the various compact and mid-size Glocks, M&P's, XD's and DAO Sig Sauers.

What do I carry? Depending on the circumstances it'll usually be a Kahr CW45, 1911 45 ACP (either a Commander or an Officer size), Kel-Tec PF9 or Kel-Tec P3-AT.

Whatever gun you buy, be sure you get a quality holster and gun belt. Even if you pocket carry, you still need a holster. Let you know what you end up getting.

Not disagreeing with you in any way. You can practice shooting with cheaper, lighter recoil .38s, but if and when the time comes, I'd rather have the .357 in there for safe measure.

This. Holster is everything. Bought a cheaper IWB for my first one. It was loose and the handgun would poke out when I'd bend. Swapped over to crossbreed supertuck deluxe and I'm very pleased. Keeps it tight.

Small .357's are great if you can hang on to them. Not many people can really shoot them well repeatably.

A light .357 bucks and roars far outside of most peoples comfort zone. I have a 3" GP100 which is a hefty chunk of a gun and it's still pretty tough to shoot quick with thermonuclear loads.

Hell, I don't find it too bad. If you don't like the kick practicing, you're probably not going to feel it with the adrenaline pumping in a bad situation. Sorta like deer hunting.
I hated sighting in my cousins .300 win mag. When I shot a deer with it, didn't feel shite.

I recently acquired a Taurus TCP .380 and it is tiny. You can almost forget that it's in your pocket.

I want one, that or a PM9.

I think my next gun is going to be a full size Glock, though.

Thanks for the insight.

I do have a lot of handgun experience and a .380 wouldn't be my first choice by any means but you make a good point about holsters. To me the reason why I am considering a .380 over other calibers is its ability to be pocket carried. I'm not a big guy so inside the waistband just doesn't seem practical although I may be able to get use to it. I guess the question I should ask first is how should I carry? This would make handgun choice a little easier. I would rather carry a 9mm over a .380 I'm just worried about it being too uncomfortable and then giving up on carrying.

N82 Tactical holsters are awesome. You can get a tuckable one and it won't show at all. In my opnion, they make the best holster for the money.

Lotta good info from toth. I'll just add that I have a M&P compact, M&P shield and 637 in my carry rotation. I used to carry the compact the most when I lived in Baton Rouge but I have since moved back to my small home town and find the 637 in my pocket fairly often. I shouldn't let my guard down but admittedly I have.

i can't hit shite after the first shot with mine. At 10 yards, I'm lucky if I put a second shot anywhere on the paper. I haven't shot it a whole bunch but I just don't find it enjoyable to shoot at the range.

There's no way I'd ever choose it for C&C. I'd be like so many gangbangers killing innocent people with stray fire.

.380 compact, I can put every round in a 6" group at 10 yards as fast as I can squeeze the trigger. It's a .380 round but that's one hamburger'd up motherfricker if I'm ever forced to draw.

I carry a full size 1911 chambered in 10mm everyday.

When I'm not carrying the delta elite I typically carry a 1911 in 45 ACP. If it's not the 45 then I carry a shield in 9mm.

It all depends on what I'm wearing, if I can get away with the god gun 10mm that's what I'm going with.
