This is a good read of some great outdoor adventures by Christian Koch from Demark and one of the main settlers in Perlington Mississippi in the the mid 1800s. From his diary, reading this makes me wish I was on that adveture traveling around almost 200 years ago. Seeing the sights and enjoying the outdoors was hard times I'm sure, but looking back at it from my desk at work, I wish I was there.

I found the part where he talked about the freed slaves and how they adapted to free life interesting

Thank you for killing my entire morning. Very good read. Sounds like he lived a hell of a life.

Thanks!

The journals of Lewis and Clarke are quite good reads, too.

I find it interesting also due to part of being a local guy. I read a book recently about he and his family. Book was told via the letters he wrote home while away. His wife stayed home with their children during the civil wartime. Christian Koch couldn't return due to the union blockade at the Rigoletts. Very interesting tales of times back then.

However, I could not help noticing the immense quantities of fire-flies which flew among the trees and filled the whole woods with light.

I miss fireflies

Me too. The ones we saw camping in Arkansas were the first ones I'd seen in a long time. We used to see them all the time. Damn global warming
