OB advice on remodeling
Posted by Reubaltaich on 9/19/14 at 6:11 am00
OK OB'ers. I posted this on the money board and got a few good responses.
Hopefully the Admins don't mind me posting this on the OB but you guys seem a lot more knowledgeable about a remodeling DIY project.
Looking to replace my shower/tub with a new one piece unit, perferrably made of acrylic.
I have been looking at several name brands, the Sterling-Kohler Accord seems to be the best I have run across.
The AKER by Maax seems a little too flimsy.
The Auatic name seems to be pretty good.
I don't see any other name brands that stand out.
Anything I am missing soemthing here?
Also, I heard that the big-box stores quality is not as good as an actual plumbing stores quality.
Also, I got an estimate from a plumber in West Monroe of roughyly $2500 to lay out all the pipe for the shower-tub, the toilet, and bathroom sink.
We are going to tear out the flooring and walls and remove all the old fixtures, basically all I want a plumber to do is redo all the water piping and relocate the hot water heater(gas) about 5 feet from where it sits.
BTW, its a wood frame house which is sitting off the ground and the bathroom not really that large, around 10' x 15'. $2500 seems very high.
Any suggestions for a good plumber in the Ouachita parish area for this ?
ETA, also heard that PEX pipe is the best way to go. What say the OBers?
TIA.

Plumbers are expensive, get a couple of bids, but I bet they are all close on price...

ditto. most people are SHOCKED when they see the price of plumbing L & M. quality fixtures are way more expensive than most people realize.
pex is good stuff: easy to repair if there is a problem, shows leaks immediately instead of months down the road, and has an excelent expansion capability of +/-60% nominal size when cold weather arrives (your house is off the ground!).
edit: i'm a builder

I installed an aquaglass tub/shower when I redid my house. No issues.

Price is probably pretty competitive. I just had them run a discharge for a sink outside, and stub up a water line. Discharge was about 65 ft, I dug the trench, fresh water supply was about 5 ft away they dug that one. They were there for about 2 hours, and billed me $1400, which was a discounted rate. Friend of a friend kind of deal.

I would suggest that you consider replacing your tub and surround with a precast cultured marble tub and surround. The manufacturers of these units will come to your home and take all the necessary measurements. I did this several years ago and waited until the new custom tub was ready before I broke out my existing cast iron tub with a sledge hammer. I also did all of the plumbing myself, which entails screwing the new drain through the tub and installing the overflow. The manufacturer will drill the surround to fit over your existing hot and cold water supply, water spout, and shower head. IMHO this is a much better retrofit than a acrylic unit.

One important thing to do is get measurements on the new tub/shower and make sure you have enough room to get it into the space.

If you are measuring yourself for the purpose of ordering a new custom tub/shower, counter, etc. in an old home, I suggest you tear the old one out first. I once (once) ordered before tearing out a tub. Ended up with a couple previously unkown obstructions behind the tub. Became a shimming SOB.

This is accurate. And like already stated, plumbers are expensive and in general so are bathrooms.

Came here post that. OP may be better with marble.

I do a lot of remodel stuff myself, but plumbing is one of the few times an expert can be worth it. That way when you pout everything together and it leaks, at least it's not you having to redo it all.

We recently (in the past couple of years) remodeled a couple of bathrooms. Went with Swanstone for the walk-in shower, but they also make tub/shower walls. LINK The price isn't that bad, but the kits are easy to install. I didn't see tubs on their site, but it was an easy install. The shower walls you could nail or screw into the studs and the corners overlapped. Put the back wall on first, then the sides. Another option for you to think about instead of the one-piece unit. Might make installation a little easier if you can match a tub to it. We weren't going with the tub/shower combo since we were converting an old den into a master bath and walk-in closet. We did the pedestal tub out in the main room and there are separate rooms, one for the closet, and another for the shower and toilet.

Is the sink a single or double? My plumber here in Birmingham qouted me so much per rough-in and so much per feet of pipe. We went with Pex for the water supply, and it was a good bit of larger PVC for the drains. Ended up being 5 rough-ins between the tub, shower, toilet, and pair of sinks. And 4 separate drains through the floor all connecting into the main drain in the basement. I think we ended up paying him close to $5k but he also hung paneling, drywall, repaired some spots in the ceiling where the electrician had to cut for additional wiring, painting, installing trim and painting that, and putting down some flooring that we purchased. We also purchased all of the plumbing fixtures. And he also repaired a broken window and fixed my garage door. I'm not sure exactly how much of it was for the plumbing work since I paid him for it all once it was all completed, but $2,500 doesn't sound too high for something as labor intensive and important as plumbing. If you have a shitty plumber or electrician it will cause problems down the line so I'd rather pay someone with experience to do that rather than cheap out and end up with leaks. Relocating the water heater may be hard, especially since it deals with gas lines. Ours is in the basement and there isn't much slack in the gas line feeding it so that would require all new plumbing as well. It comes into the house in a metal pipe and there is a small flexible connector hose, and I don't know how long they make those, so it may mean the plumber adding pipe to that as well. Obviously metal is more expensive than PVC so that would factor into the cost.

Look online and order your fixtures there. We ordered the shower valve and sink faucets from Amazon and saved a good bit, and they're good quality Delta faucets. Plus there are more stylish options online than just the basic stuff all the big box stores carry. We wanted our sink faucets to be taller, and match what came with the pedestal tub we ordered.

Hey guys, sorry for the late response. Football season is here.
Thanks for all your responses. I am buying all the fixtures(tub/shower, sink & toilet).
The plumber says he will supply all the fittings and PEX pipe.
His price really shocked me. I was thinking more around $1000 to $1200.
Once again, thanks for all the responses. The OB is the best..

Question about installing PEX.
Is it going to be a problem going in with PEX and tieing it into the existing PVC water-line system?
TIA
