Suggestions for sons first guitar?
Posted by LSU alum wannabe on 9/18/14 at 9:23 pm00
Full disclosure the boy if FOUR!!!
So a Little Martin or a BBTaylor is a bit excessive and would end up being more for Daddy.
What other options are there if any? He loves to play with it. But he has a cheap toy guitar that is not worth restringing. Just getting to a point where he gets that where he can put his fingers on the frets make a difference (that face was priceless). Something he can grow into?
I'll hang up and listen.

Does it have to be acoustic? If not then a Squier Mini Strat would be a great option for an electric guitar without investing much cash. Four is young and his hands are probably very small so a 3/4 sized guitar is more than likely a must for the next few years at least. This guitar would be solid for him for the next 4-5 years I would say. A good little practice amp is a must with this too. I would suggest a Marshall MG10 combo amp. Ive been having one for about 6-7 years and it's a great little practice amp. Dont forget the cables, strings (prlly want to go with 9 gauge strings at a maximum for a 4 year olds hans) and a good tuner as well.

Agree. These things are sold by the boatload in Targets, etc, around Xmas

I don't see a four year old doing anything more with a guitar than using it as a battering ram, tbh.

Not an electric.
Just looking for a smallish acoustic that is better than toy quality.

If he's 4, just get a fender squier.
It'll probably be dropped a bit.

At four, get him a Martin Backpacker. It'll be decent size for him, and buying it is a win-win. If he doesn't like playing, you have a backpacker. If he does enjoy playing, get him a 3/4 or a full-size when the time comes. A squier or crap acoustic will end up as trash, where the backpacker will be kept forever.

For a 4 y/o? The 1/4 size Strunal would be appropriate:

I don't know that "growing into it" is a good goal. I mean, you wouldn't fit him with a pair of shoes 5 sizes too big.
