Yes, it's my turn to ask for help. Enjoy the stimulant-induced wall of text.

I kind of want to lock in my Amazon trade-in for my iPhone 4s before it plummets. I've been an iPhone user since 2007--first, because I was an early adopter and there was nothing else out there to compete with the iPhone properly. Likewise, when the 3gs was released, there were very few compelling android-based devices out there to compete, according to reviews at least. By the time I went to the 4S over two years ago, it was essentially out of apathy. At this point, the landscape has changed considerably. I was ready to try out an Android phone, but the release of the iPhone 6 Plus has me considering that as well. Part of me has the feeling that I'm "missing out" on something by not going with an Android phone, and the other part of me kind of doesn't give a shite.

I'm getting tired of reading reviews of phones. For one thing, it's near impossible to read a review that doesn't have an agenda. Secondly, looking at hardware specs is not as helpful as I would hope, because it mostly boils down to the user experience and how well-utilized the hardware is in the first place. Even camera specs can be deceptive because of the marketing jargon and photography-specific terminology that I don't always fully understand, and the most valid comparison for me is simply looking at the same scene photographed by various phones. Hard to find that for a multi-way comparison. I did see such a comparison between the 6, 6 Plus, and the S5, and the low-light photos were considerably better on the iPhone.

I've made a similar post many months ago in the PC thread on the gaming board, but the reply was essentially "Nexus 5." I'll be clear right now: leave out the Nexus 5 in your recommendations. For one thing, the camera on it is not a big enough upgrade from the 4s, and the camera is one of the most important features to me (to an extent). Secondly, I'm on an old-school unlimited plan with AT&T, and I get subsidized phones. Might as well use it since it's built in to my service costs anyway. I'm placing my limit at $299 (and only for the right phone) subsidized price.

Honestly, one of my favorite things about my 4S is being able to Jailbreak and do things I'm not supposed to be doing, and I am not willing to give those up -- including the ad-free unlimited skip Pandora (which I know CAD has me covered there), acquiring apps I'm otherwise supposed to pay for, and unauthorized tethering on my unlimited plan. I really don't know much about how that's achieved on Android, so some enlightenment there would be helpful.

Another feature I'm looking for is a fairly significant boost in camera quality. I'm not necessarily looking for a camera that also happens to be phone, but a phone whose camera was given due diligence in the design process -- something that doesn't just snap high-ISO grainy garbage when indoors. Gotta get good snapshots of the kids, and I quickly learned with baby #1 that carrying around a dedicated camera at all times is not practical.

I also want a bigger screen than the iPhone 4s, which I realize narrows the selection down to approximately every phone.

For phones/tablets in general, I'm not a tinkerer. It's not to say I wouldn't be happy with some level of customization, but I just don't want people to assume that my ridiculous amount of screwing around on PCs translates to mobile devices. Outside of jailbreaking so that I can do things I'm not supposed to do, I'm fairly apathetic. Maybe Android will change my mind about this, because I will admit that the iOS happy little fenced-in petting zoo of an operating system has given me more of a "as long as it works" attitude. It does have its appeal in a way, and it's part of the reason why I am considering the iPhone 6 Plus among all the other options.

I'll also clarify that I am not tied to any ecosystem. I use a combination of Microsoft and Google alongside the iPhone, and use my main PC as a file server. I don't even use iTunes other than as the necessary gate to get media from PC to iPhone.

So anyways, all the above considered, I'd appreciate some suggestions and solid reasoning.

Try to tone down the typical fanboyism. You cannot fool me. If you only have experience with one or two phones, that's fine. Feel free to tell me what your phone can and can't do and how well it will fit my needs. Don't tell me it's the best, though.

Ok, let's say the horrible morally offensive statement about piracy wasn't there. Then, what might you have to contribute?

The iPhone 6+ would be a huge jump in screen size for you. You might want to go play with a phablet at best buy before you consider something bigger than 5". Also, be aware that a new iPhone will come with ios8 which may not have a jailbreak for months. Maybe even up to a year. So you may not get the "features" and "customization" you're used to. Also, it starts at the very top of you limit. If you go with the regular 6, you can get the 64GB and be in your budget.

If you like the ecosystem and camera is that important, stay with iPhone. I've never had an android so it's tough for me to sell you on any of those. I'm sure someone will come along and help with those.

I haven't had much consideration for capacity. I've never had to worry about filling up 16GB on my phones. I only store photos and apps, and I generally move photos and video recordings to other forms of media as backup.

As far as size, I have messed around with a Galaxy Note briefly, and found it to be decently sized, still fits in the pocket, and my hands are just large enough to operate the basic functions with one hand. I guess I should actually check the dimensions of the Note vs the 6 Plus, though. I don't think I'd want any bigger than the Note.

I don't like or dislike the Apple ecosystem, but it's not a necessity on an iPhone, other than needing iTunes for certain things. The more I think about it, it's really been the build quality (or the perception of having superior build quality) that's made me hesitant to switch to something else. That's something Apple does extremely well most of the time. That, and I like my comfort level in disassembling iPhones and replacing parts myself if something were to go wrong. There is certainly no shortage of chinese knockoff iPhone parts, many of which are nearly indistinguishable from the OEM part.

Should probably wait another month for the Nexus 6 and go from there, odds it's the best Android phone again are high.

All you have to do is pop your AT&T sim in and you're good to go. But they old their value to be sold used like an iPhone and you'd still have your subsidized pricing available come early next year if you wanted to ditch the Nexus 6 and use your upgrade to get something next year at any point.

I'm in a similar situation as you. I've been with iPhone since the 3G (currently have the 5). But my primary reasons for wanting to move on is battery life (I had one of the faulty batteries that they recently did a recall on, so it was worse for me than most) and boredom. Just want something new.

Main things I'm looking for are battery life, camera, and nice display. I'm waiting for the Nexus X to come out and then I'll choose between it and the LG G3.

The Sony Xperia Z3 looks pretty damn good but will only be available on T-Mobile in the US. Motorola Moto X looks great too, but the camera is supposedly lacking based off the few reviews I've seen. And since Motorola is making the Nexus X, I'm worried they may use that same camera for it.

N5 battery life is OK but not great.

N5 camera is OK but highly doubt it's comparable to new iphones

My advice is to let the dust settle since both apple and android have major system updates coming out in the next month or so.

Coming from a 4s any top of the line phone is going to feel like a major upgrade.

Don't let caddora sway you one way or the other however knowing how technical you are I'm still surprised you would waste time fighting apple to maintain your phone jailbreak when Google not only doesn't care but provides tools to help you get under the hood.

My work phone was just "upgraded" from an HTC One (M7) to the Galaxy S5 (our plans apparently run out in October and phones must be changed out)...I have only had it for a few days, and I actually like it...I never root, or change launchers, etc. and Android has treated me pretty good. I have not used an Iphone since the 3/3G days, and that was forced on me as a work phone. I made the mistake of switching my wife to Android after years on her crapple system and have never lived it down...It lasted for 7 months before she got a new iphone...Long story longer, until you spend some time with an Android phone, you won't know what you're missing

ETA: Skip the S5..Your previous USB charging cables will not work on it...

LG G3 or the nexus 6 (if there is one). I still have not seen one article with any definitive answer or proof that a nexus 6 is actually coming in October. Just a bunch of speculation. No leaked photos, hard date for a release, nothing. I had an AT&T G3 (850) and just swapped it for a tmobile variant because the At&t version has a locked boot loader and has shitty PMA wireless charging. The tmobile G3 (851) comes with boot loader unlocked and supports Qi wireless charging. I'm still getting a nexus X or 6 or whatever it is when/ if it drops in October.

Since photos are important to you , they're raving about the 6's camera.

ETA: for example-- LINK

If you do stick with the iPhone, definitely go with the 6 Plus. In fact for all the words you wrote I only read 2 things that really matter to you: Jailbreaking so you can keep sticking it to The Man, and camera quality. It seems like what you really want to see are the best Android Camera phones to compare to the 6 Plus.

I would wait a little bit. The HTC's don't really have a great camera but the phone is amazing. Samsung has a great camera but Touchwiz is terrible and I do not remember if the S5 can be rooted to flash a custom ROM. My wife's LG G2 is amazing. It's what the S4/S5 was trying to do. I'm assuming the LG G3 will be better.

I am not an Iphone hater. If you don't like tinkering and are ok with how the layout looks all the time, get the new one.

Android phones can easily download apps like CAD's. Tethering is a non issue. I could do it with bluetooth without rooting. Rooted, I can do it anyway.

Battery life IMO tends to be better on Androids because you can root them and flash Custom ROMS and install apps like Greenify. Samsung does have something going for them and that is the removable back to get to the SD card and battery.

If you care about accessories, get a Samsung or IPhone.

If you like constant updates, get a Nexus or Iphone. They go straight to the phones. HTC and LG take a while longer.

Best camera's tend to come from the Nokia phones. But they are Windows. I am not sure at all how unauthorized apps and rooting is handled with them.

If you had to get one now. I would get a One Plus One though I do not know how their camera is. For regular phones that can be got in the store. I would go HTC One M8 because they are very quick with their updates now and the phone is very smooth. LG G3 if camera is that important.

the reason my android is rooted and unlocked is not to 'stick it to the man' but to have the flexibility to set up the device so its most useful for what i do.

the fact you see jailbreaking as 'sticking it to apple' says everything about what apple has their flock believing.

And if you read the OP, his reason for jailbreaking was to keep using his unlimited data with tethering capability that requires a jailbreak. He's sticking it to AT&T/Verizon, not Apple. My comment was appropriate to the context of the OP and meant to be tongue in cheek, not an indictment of the jailbreaking lifestyle.

Eh, charging extra for tethering is how AT&T/Verizon tries to "stick it" to their customers. This is more unsticking it from yourself IMO.

Those plans were always disingenuous and I think it's funny that so many have been able to keep them this long. Again, it was a tongue in cheek comment highlighting what was really important to him because he wrote a lot of stuff but really only seemed to care about 2 simple things. I wasn't trying to get the android crowd riled up and hijack the thread, I was hoping it would encourage recommendations for the top 2 or 3 Android camera phones that can be jailbroken (or not if Android doesn't need to be jailbroken for his needs).
