Wife works and we have two kids ages 10 and 15. Thinking about working another job in ND. Pay will be twice as much so I'm seriously considering.
Anyone else make something like this work?

I would do it. Just think of what all you can do with them on your 14 days off.

Have fun living in the cold arse North in man camps with 100s of other oil field workers. I know a few guys that did it and were miserable on the verge of slitting their wrist. Both were back in LA within a year.

Saw a special on it recently. Looks 100% miserably depressing.

I can do it no problem. I spent 2 1/2 years in prison.

That's what they told me. They had an RV they stayed in that was housed inside a huge warehouse with all the other guys and their RVs. Said it was miserable and after a while it stunk...bad. There is no housing or hotels, and if you do find one, it's so expensive that it's not worth it.

Since they are 10 and 15 all he could do during the week 10 out of the 12 months a year is bring then and pick them up from school (assuming they have no extracurricular activities).
At this age, I feel it is imperative they have both a strong mother and father figure in their lives. Unless you are unhappy with your current job or you are struggling financially, I don't see the move as having a positive effect on the family.

there is a very good reason it pays a lot...that is because they have to pay that much to get anyone to do it...

And they have constant turnover

I actually think this may be MJ2's crowd though. He could probably deal with the guys up there.

Jody will take care of your old lady.

If you would read some of MJ2s past threads then you would know that his wife isn't into Jody unless that's the name of her ex boyfriend she disappeared with one night.

I agree with above.
You've got two incomes now so it can't be that bad.
More money is nice but my experience is you grow to the size of your container. But just because the container is a little bigger doesn't mean you're happier.
Now if you're on the verge of bankruptcy and this stint in ND will get you out of the hole that is something different altogether. If you or your children have no college savings and that trip will change that then it is worth considering.
At 10 and 15 there is a limited amount of time left you will get to spend with your kids and then they're grown up and gone.
Good luck with your decision and it's your family so only you can make the call.

I make $65000 right now. Would make $125000 and work half the year.
I'm 42 years old and am mature enough to handle the perils.
Would be staying in a trailer doing my work from a computer.
I'm an Arc GIS engineer.
