What is the scale for Bryce Harper? When is he a bust?

Obviously, he is not even close to a bust at this point. The majority of players wouldn't even be in the major leagues yet, but what bar does he have to reach to be considered a success.
Obviously, LeBron James reached the unbelievable expectations people had for him in the NBA, but will Bryce Harper reach those expectations in the MLB.
Mike Trout to this point is clearly better than Harper. And Harper is not hitting anywhere close to .300. But this is okay because he is a power guy. However, he has yet to reach the power that scouts projected him to have at the Major League level.
Obviously, he still has plenty of time to become a Hall of Fame caliber player, but at what age do we expect him to enter his prime? And at what point would he have to be labeled somewhat of bust. After all, this guy was not hyped up since he was a teenager to be a solid contributor. This guy was supposed to be a legend of the game. Fair or not, those were the expectations.

Not even close to now, the kid is 21. I don't think its fair to even talk about him being a bust for 2-3 more years minimum.

Most players his age are still playing in the minors. The jump from high school to pro can be smooth or rough. It's clearly gone the latter. The trick is to continue working hard. I think he will be okay but he won't be some all-time great like people hoped.

He'll probably always be unfairly judged against the hype if he doesnt produce outstanding stats.

He's got above an .800 OPS and is at least a league average defender.
That is not a bust.
That is not a bust.

Harper has actually been damn good recently. Hitting for pop and average recently. He is still so absurdly young. He will be really good. Just needs to not get a freak injury like this year.

First of all, I never said he was a bust.
Second of all, he has a .765 OPS this year, putting him at about 65th in the majors. If he kept up his career OPS of .816, he'd be at the 30 spot.
This dude was not hyped up to be 30th in OPS in the majors. Clearly, he needs to improve. The question is whether or not he will improve.

His jump to the pros has been rough? Most idiotic thing ever posted on this board, do you even watch baseball?

There is a difference between not living up to expectations and being a bust.
A bust means you get nothing out of your pick, and he either takes a borderline meaningless role (A la a Stephen Strasburgh turning into middle relief) or is out of the league.

Agree to disagree. Him just being a regular major league would be a major disappointment, and in my opinion that qualifies as a bust.

He's already an above average major leaguer and he's only 21.
How many of those guys who are putting the higher OPSes are smack dab in the prime of their career or offer nothing defensively.
Plus didn't he tear a ligament in his thumb? That is a serious injury, and Dustin Pedroia STILL hasn't come back 100% from it yet.

Sure he is... Trout also isn't BURNT-OUT about the HYPE Harper got... IMO that makes a difference to said player... Harper is kinda like Johnny football.... But better.... He is still a kid and most thought he was gonna be one of the BEST of all time...................... That's a lot on a kid.........

I think Trout's production has caused a lot of people to speed up their expectations for Harper, even if they don't realize it.
