And probably cars too.
The law making guns illegal for felons is understandable and reasonable for carry outside of a castle doctrine location.
However, let's advocate for allowing felons to have and use guns in their homes for sure, and vehicles, probably, too.
I'm still thinking through the vehicle one... can't think of a reason not to allow that as well.

I would surmise then entire reason to not allow felons to own guns is because as a society, we feel they cannot be trusted (since they broke that societal trust, doing whatever it is they did to become a felon).
If we are going to allow felons to own guns in the home and vehicle, then we are saying "we trust that you, as a felon, will abide by the law and not use the gun outside of your home or vehicle"
At that point, either they will abide, making it a moot point to restrict where they can carry a firearm, or they will break the law and carry the gun with them outside of their home anyway.
ETA: Either let them own firearms straight up or not at all.

I've recently rethought my stance on felons and their ability to possess firearms. I used to be totally against it. However, if I am to be honest and true to Constitutional principles... if they have served their sentence and not under probation, they have served their debt to society and should have all rights restored to them. If they can't have their rights, then they should still be in jail.

"society" doesn't have the power to limit anyone's rights through prior restraint. Do crime. Pay time. Done.

We trust them enough to let them back freely into society?

shite, I find that to be a pretty fair way of looking at it. Besides, if an ex-con really wanted to harm someone, they would find a way regardless.

My point exactly.
If we don't want them having guns because we feel they could be a danger with them. At that point you'd have to wonder, if they are going to be a danger, why are they not still in jail?
I believe if you have served your time and are not on probation, you should be granted the right to possess a firearm.

I'm fine with felons having firearms. I believe that all of their Constitutional rights should be restored once they have paid their debt to society. If they "can't be trusted", then they shouldn't be released from prison.

I don't think we should make it within his legal right to have one. No.
Its like not letting a pedophile near kids. They may still break the law, but you don't make it within their right to be a step away from it.

I've always been of the mindset that ex-felons should be able to legally own and possess arms. If you are not under the restraints of probation and have served all required stipulations of sentencing, you are free and entitled to ALL your fundamental American freedoms as guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.

You guys are unbelievable with your gun rights. It's as if you deny that they are weapons at all.
Let's take an extreme case: Someone is convicted of being reckless with a gun. Basically shooting at things on his front yard... do you think he should just get his gun back after he serves a month in jail? How about the second time?
A murderer? Oh, here's your gun back. Would you like to apply for a concealed carry permit?
But I guess once they are out of jail then all of their rights are restored right? Do you think that people convicted of accepting bribes or embezzlement should be able to get a job in the tax office? Should people with multiple counts of voter fraud get to vote? Should candidates who rig elections get to run again?

I'd say it depends on the nature of the felony. If it was firearms related, then it makes some sense.
But if the felony was embezzlement or something non-violent, then the firearms ban doesn't make any sense at all.

Pedophiles get all rights back? Can be around kids unsupervised? Teach in schools?
Thankfully, the feds, most states, and the Supreme Court have decided that felons do not get their gun rights back.
